    Canon Drop-in Filters

Apparently I didn't do my homework when I bought myself the 48 mm drop in filter. I have the 300 f/2.8.

    What lens uses this filter?

And what would be wrong about using this instead of the 52mm filter in the 300mm? Maybe I just haven't looked closely enough yet, but I haven't identified anything wrong yet.

    Thanks,

    Dave

The 48mm drop-in filter is for the original non-IS versions of Canon's super-telephoto lenses:
    • EF 300mm f/2.8 L USM
    • EF 400mm f/2.8 L USM
    • EF 400mm f/2.8 L II USM
    • EF 500mm f/4.5 L USM
    • EF 600mm f/4 L USM
    • EF 1200mm f/5.6 L USM

Apart from the 1200mm lens, these were replaced with IS versions in 1999. All the IS versions take a 52mm drop-in filter.

I guess that using the smaller 48mm filter may cause vignetting (darkening of the edge of the frame) but this might only affect full frame cameras. Cropped sensors don't see the full image produced by these lenses, so you may not have any problem using the 48mm filter.

I wonder if the 48mm filter is aligned correctly in your new model lens, i.e. Is the center of your smaller filter aligned with the center of the glass?

The 48mm wont work in the 52 mm frame. It wont be vignetting but a lens blockage.

One missed off the list is the 200 1.8L
