Is a tilt-shift the only answer

So, when you use a wide angle lens (like a 17mm on a crop sensor) and take interior shots shooting across a room, how can you get all your verticals straight? Is it just a compromise? Does lens quality come into play? Would a tilt-shift fix this, and if so, is it easy to line things up using the viewfinder?
Words get in the way of what I meant to say.

It depends on the problem - is it barrel distortion or perspective distortion (keystoning)? Ok, maybe it doesn

If the camera is levelled (preferrably on a tripod), you get the verticals straight. Any pointing up or down will result in perspective distortion (unless you have a T/S lens).

Lens distiortion is usually handled quite good by DPP or some other RAW converter. You can also compensate for perspective distortion in post processing, but it could require a lot of cropping (depending on the amount of perspective distortion).
