Colin - I like the lighting in the first picture...the dark smoke is highlighted well from behind...looks very dramatic (almost like a doomsday "we're killing the planet" kind of feel to it).

The Dog was hanging out a car door window at the Kihei Cafe in Maui. I didn't get a model release for that, so don't tell the dog owner. I don't know if you can make out the info on the dog tag anyway... I would have paid him in food, but...
The smoke, I think, is actually steam from a sugar cane processing plant. Istopped forthe light through the steam, which to be honest I really coudln't get in it's full wonder, but the part I noticed later, which I find kind of amusing, and fitting with your doomsday scenario, is the pigeon/dove sitting on the line in front of (and looking underneath) the smoke stack, kind of an environmental commentary, even if the real thing was far less menacing. But, I like the doomsday angle. Far more entertaining.
