Uh oh, I think something may be broken internally on my 50 1.4

I was just getting ready to go shoot a show, and while waiting for some friends to arrive, I decided to play around with the camera by taking a picture of my cat. Went into live view and noticed that I was getting a red square, even though I wasn't too close and there was plenty of light so it could focus. Switched out of live view, and still, no focusing. Turned autofocus off and tried focusing manually, the lens would not budge. The focus ring moves fine, but the lens is locked on 0.45m.

I don't remember dropping it or bumping it or anything.

The notoriously problematic autofocus motor of the 50/1.4 strikes again… Sorry to hear that!

    Nooooooooo!
And no 1.2 either, if I'm spending that much I'm gonna get the 16-35 or the 100-400

You guys think I am rich, don't you :P
However, I should be starting a new job soon so I should be able to start buying some new goodies. Probably getting the 100-400 first, but still not 100% decided if I want it, or the 16-35 first.

    I'll get a new 50 soon enough.

I have recently had the need to identify a local lens repair shop (thread coming in the next day or so with the backstory). What I found was Sanford Camera Repair down in Arlington, MA. You may want to drop them an email and get a quote. Their quote for my issue was very reasonable.

Anyone have experience with Sanford? Any other camera/lens repair facilities that are recommended? In this day and age, I imagine it could be anywhere and we could just ship the lens.

I'll have to look into it. I'm in no rush to get it repaired because I don't use it enough to justify spending the money to get it repaired immediately. I might just pick up the 40mm instead, who knows?
