Thread: How much is a Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM actually worth?

  1. #1

Question How much is a Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM actually worth?

How much is a Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM actually worth?

I have this lens in 10 condition with 5 months Canon USA service warranty remaining.

The carrying case is a little scuffed on the outside but the lens, hood, and caps are like the day it left Canon.

How much should I ask for it when selling?

    Thanks all, Will T.

Adorama used currently has one rated E (not E+, so not a 10) for $6250, so perhaps the $6500 ballpark?

Edit, no, wait, the Adorama is a version II lens. so less than that.

Just looking through the sold listing on ebay...that seems about right. I saw a low of $2,900, a high of $4,100 but a cluster of sales around $3,800-$3,900.

$6250 for a used 'E' grade copy of the MkII, when they're $6600 brand new (after Canon dropped the price by $700)?

Yet not one in this condition with a canon USA warranty remaining?

I should have mentioned that every outside part is new, including the hood, side switch panel, and tripod foot.

The remaining warranty is from Canon Irvine completely going through the lens certifying it working like new then reassembling it with all new exterior parts.

And thanks to all responding, it is very much appreciated.

I bought mine used from B&H about 3 years ago for 3800, it was rated 10 and still had the new smell, at the time new they were selling for 4500, they went up to 4900 new right before the release of the new version. At that time a used 10 rating was going for about 4200.

The new II version just dropped $700, you can look for used to go down. IMO if you get 4K for it you are getting a fair price.

Mine would probably still make a 10, but I am always conservative easily it is a 9 plus. $3800 would buy it.
