    Question Which lens do you plan on getting next, if any?

    I've been holding off for a while on purchasing my next lens, half because I have been super busy with work and haven't been able to shoot much at all this year, and half because I was hoping and praying that Canon would announce a successor to the 100-400mm at this year's Photokina. That, sadly, never came to be, so I decided to forget about the 100-400mm and go a different route.

    The next lens I plan on getting will probably be the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II, along with a 2x TC. Hopefully those will be mine around Christmastime, or at the latest, Springtime. The only thing I can see getting in my way would be if the Samyang/Rokinon/Bower 12mm f/2.8 Fisheye came out first, but that's a cheap, fun lens that I could hold off on.

    After that, I am not entirely sure what I will get. I will be missing out on an rectilinear ultra wide, so the 16-35mm f/2.8 is a possibility, as is the f/4 version, but I like the f/2.8 for shows and starscapes. Who knows, I might just get the 24mm f/1.4 or 14mm f/2.8, the possibilities are endless! Let's just hope this new job pans out so I can afford to treat this Gear Acquisition Syndrome

    I was also hoping to see a 100-400 this year as well. It would have been a good addition for me. Not sure yet if I wait, buy the current, or re-evaluate.

    I had thought about the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II + 2x TC as you are thinking about, but I have the 70-200 f/4 IS and like the weight and cost. With the 100-400 it would have also let me add a 1.4x TC with the 5D3 if I wanted a little more reach. I'll probably have to map out a few options and see where the overall costs goes. I am not sure I want the size of the new Sigma 150-600.

    current line up for my 5D3
    * 16-35mm f/4L IS
    * 24-105mm f/4L IS
    * 70-200mm f/4L IS
    * 35mm f/1.4L
    * 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro

    Overall, I like the spread I have. f/4 has worked for me and it lets me spread the money out across lenses. If I need faster, the 35 f/1.4 has been good. Next is figuring out what I want over 200mm.

    That's a nice setup. Right now I have the 5D3, 24-105mm f/4L, 100mm f/2.8 Macro, and a 50mm f/1.4 with a busted autofocus motor. I could also see myself getting an SL1 with the new 24mm pancake for a small walkaround camera, but who knows.

    A lot of this is dependent if I get this new job, then I will be able to afford a lot of new toys. I'd even go off and buy the 300mm f/2.8. My income would be almost quadrupled.

    I was just thinking the other day what lenses I might want in my collection besides what I have. Here is the results:
    Currently own and use:
    Zooms:
    EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
    EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
    EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM

    Primes:
    EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM
    EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
    EF 85mm f/1.8 USM

    Missing:
    *EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM ($1,699.00)
    *Extender EF 1.4X III ($449.99)
    *EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM ($949.99)

    Not sure which is going to come first, This is all for my 6D, so with owning a 7D as well the extender isn't that important. I am thinking the Macro is my most likely candidate.

    I wish I hadn't waited so long to get the EF 70-200 II. Actually, I only waited a year after getting my 5DIII. But still....simply an amazing lens. It is not my "most used" lens, that would be my general purpose zoom, but it is generating more than it's fair share of my favorite pictures. It is not just the sharpness, but also color and contrast. Buy what best fits your style and needs, but if you think you need a lens in the 70-200 mm range, the II is a great choice.

    Regarding your question, I am looking at the following lenses once my budget recovers:
    • 16-35 f/4 IS
    • Fast prime UWA (not sure which one, I may be waiting for the 24A)
    • TS-E 24
    • Something to get me beyond 400 mm (I will likely be replacing the 100-400L)
      • Sigma 150-600 (likely S, but will look at the C)
      • Tamron 150-600 (seems like a great lens, but IQ seems to fall off enough >400mm to not warrant selling my 100-400L)
      • A big white (very intrigued by the 400 f/4 DO II, but will look at several options once I have the budget)

    All four are very different lenses, but those are the primary "holes" I have left in my kit. The 70-200 II is so good I am not sure I feel the need for prime lenses in that focal range anymore. Granted, I know there are reasons to covet the 85 f/1.2 or 135 f/2, it is just that I am not sure I need either....yet

    After what I've seen from my Siggy 50mm f1.4 Art, I'm hoping for an 85mm f1.4 Art. Sigma has really upped the ante on IQ. I saw a rumor about a 135mm Art lens, too. The Canon 135mm f2 is superb, so besting that will be a tough challenge.

    I agree with that.

    I currently shoot Full Frame. What I currently have:

    • 24-105 f/4L
    • 70-200 f/2.8L IS II
    • 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS
    • 100 f/2.8L IS Macro
    • 24 f/1.4L
    • 50 f/1.8 (never use unless I force myself to)
    • 10-20 f/4-5.6 Sigma (only use on 7D... haven't used in the last year)

    What I would like... probably in this order, but priorities change as needs change:

    1. 2X III
    2. 24 or 17 TSE (leaning towards 24)
    3. 24-70 f/2.8L II
    4. Would like a large prime in the 400 mm to 600 mm range. The 400 DO sounds interesting'
    5. 16-35 f/4L

    My current line up:

    1D MKIV
    1D X

    Sigma 8-16mm
    Canon 17-40mm f/4L
    Canon 35mm f/1.4L
    Canon 65mm f/2.8L MP-E Macro
    Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II
    Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L II
    Canon 180mm f/3.5L Macro
    Canon 300mm f/2.8L I
    Canon 500mm f/4L I
    1.4 X TC Version II
    2.0 X TC Version III
    Canon 12.5 mm and 25 mm extension tubes

    Wish List:

    Sell the Sigma 8-16mm and get a good ultra wide prime (perhaps a Canon tilt shift 17mm, Canon 14mm or Zeiss 21mm)
    A good 50mm prime (perhaps the new Sigma)
    Trade or sell the 500mm and get a 600mm f/4 version II
    Hoping Canon will make a full frame very high megapixel body so I can stop reading about the D800
    Pentaz 645Z medium format body with an adapter for the Canon 800mm f/5.6L Lens

    Joel, good news. You can ignore the D800, there is a D810 now.

    My current setup:

    My Father's Canon 600d
    My Father's Canon Kit Lens (18-55)
    Family Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

    My Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM
    My Canon EF 40mm f2.8 STM

    Plans for future:

    Buying my own camera (90% 60D)
    Buying my own general purpose lens (Tamron 17-50 f2.8 not stabilized version)
    Craft with my hands a good belt+pockets for camera + wide-angle lens + zoom lens + general lens

    Gift for my father: 18-135 so he can bring just one zoom-lens and the 70-300 will be mine

    Shoot.
    Dogs and cats, living together! Mass hysteria!
