It can't possibly be a bad thing. I can't wait to see what sort of overhaul SmugMug implements. Aside from the semi-recent storage bump, every change Yahoo! made to Flickr in the last several years has make it less usable. I'll qualify that my "making it worse" comment is from the web browser interface. I have no idea what the mobile experience is, but I would not be surprised to find they're prioritizing tablet and phone users using an app... they are likely the majority.

I used SmugMug for a year just to get a handle on what it was like. It's not really a social platform, but more of a "We'll help you build a photo website where you can sell your pictures" sort of service. As to what we can expect from changes resulting from its acquisition of Flickr, that's hard to predict. Hopefully, the changes are for the better.

I deleted my account, I used to use Flickr A LOT when it first came out- that social aspect was great. For the past 5 or so years, I only used it for sharing photos here or else where and now use my own site for sharing. I already pay for Zenfolio (our webhost- similar to SmugMug) so no sense for me to have photos on both places.

I hope they recognize what a basic function Flickr serves. As long as I can host and share my photos, view other photos, "like" and comment on the photos, and search through groups, I am good.

It would be interesting if they could figure out how to make the interactions/discussions better. It actually seems to me that the deregulated nature of Flickr has led to too many groups.

After the dust as settled, I will be very interested in which site targets enthusiasts and pros and is the best for the functions I rattled off above and I can see migrating to that site. I hope that it is Flickr.

I have a lot of history on Flickr and want it to continue to serve its purpose for me.

Looks like they're going ahead with it. Got this email just now:

As we announced on April 20th, Flickr has agreed to be acquired by SmugMug, the photography platform dedicated to visual storytellers. SmugMug has a long history of empowering people who love photography and who want to improve their craft, making them a perfect fit for Flickr and our creative community.

Nothing will change immediately with regard to your Flickr account. The Flickr product and brand will live on under SmugMug ownership. You will still access the same Flickr you know and love at www.flickr.com and via our mobile apps. SmugMug and Flickr will remain separate brands and you will continue to have options for free and Pro Flickr accounts. Until we notify you otherwise, you will continue to use your current login credentials.

As a result of the acquisition, Flickr accounts will be governed by SmugMug’s Terms of Service for Flickr and Privacy Policy for Flickr. The Terms of Service and Privacy Policy of Flickr’s current owner, Oath (formerly Yahoo), will not apply to the use of Flickr after the acquisition. You have until May 25, 2018 to review SmugMug’s Terms and Privacy Policy. If you do nothing in that time, your account will simply transition to SmugMug’s Terms of Service for Flickr and Privacy Policy for Flickr after the acquisition.

If you do not consent to SmugMug’s Terms and Privacy Policy, you will need to delete your Flickr account through your Account Settings. If you want to preserve a copy of your photos, be sure to download them from your Camera Roll first.

Read more detailed FAQs about this transition on the Flickr Blog.

We’re happy that Flickr is your home for photography and we look forward to the next chapter in our adventure together as we join the SmugMug family.
