    Canon RF 20mm f/1.4L VCM

Announced today, Canon's first new 20mm lens in 33 years and two stops faster than the EF 20/2.8. I preordered one at announcement time, looking forward to seeing how it performs for astro. MTFs look similar to the 24/1.4L VCM, the new 20/1.4 uses the BR coating ('blue goo') like the EF 35L II and RF 85/1.2L to reduce CA.

I already have the RF 24/1.4L, this one is pretty close numerically but 20mm is noticeably wider in my experience, and also means an extra 4 trail-free seconds for stars.

Me too. And I can't justify having both. So I guess I sell the 24mm?

I'm considering it, but it seems a shame to sell a lens I bought so recently. I'll probably keep both and see which gets more use. The bigger question for me is do I really need to also keep the RF 24/1.8 STM?

It looks really good but I haven't been able to find any reports of how much coma it will have in the corners. That can really wreck star images.

I doubt you will see such reports until the lens is actually released at the end of the month. The MTF charts suggest that astigmatism is low, which is a good sign. Overall, the 20mm seems like a close sibling of the 24mm and the latter lens controls coma very well.

That's good to know. I had the old EF 24 f/1.4 L and I had to stop it down to f/2.0 to avoid coma. Then I got the Sigma 14 f/1.8 and my goodness that is a terrific lens for astro.

I am interested to see how much coma the 20 f/1.4 has. If minimal....it is going to be tough to keep it out of my kit. But I may wait a bit. See if Canon does something slightly wider. This is mostly because I am happy with the 24 f/1.4. So far, great lens.

So, before picking up the 24 f/1.4 VCM, I would have called a low coma fast 20 mm lens a near perfect compromise, and I still might. But now, I wonder if I keep the 24 mm VCM, would I go with two lenses, something in the 14-18 mm range, if Canon were to release it. We'll see. Shoot 'til you need something. Right now I need very very little.

Great review! Looks like it's great for astro, and for artistic landscapes. Thanks for posting.
