Well, I tried the umbrella method this morning, but no keepers, here were the problems I encountered:
1. Even though I Ganged 3 lights on the umbrella, I just couldn't seem to get enough light on the bird to really light him up
2. Since I had to use my vivitar flashes on the background, I re-encountered my ghosting problem again. After a little research I realized there was a significant duration difference between the canon speedlights and the vivitar even when set at the same power levels.
3. Working with an 48 inch umbrella that close to 3 inch subject is a real pain and yielded poor results.
4. I took the white lining off of my umbrella to expose the silver backing, But I am not sure this is the right silver lining for the effect I was looking for.
I do plan to try this again, But I think a small, silver lined softbox would be better for this job which I now have on my B&H wish list. This should be easier to manage, easier to direct the light and should have the correct reflective surface that I am looking for---of course, I have been wrong before.
For now, I have had pretty good luck with two or three lights on the bird and two on the background, so I will stick to that for now.
I am still set up and ready to shoot for the remainder of the day, so hopefully I'll get some decent shots worth posting.
Until then, Happy shooting
Bob
