Hi! Sorry if this is a repeat, but I didn't find a thread of this nature in my searching. I'll kick it off with two pictures from today.

Don't be technical about macro meaning 1:1 or greater!

A shot back from the wildflower season in Anza Borrego (not sure if I ever posted this on TDP before.) This was when I first got into SLR photography and did not know much about controlling DOF. I borrowed the 100mm f/2.8 macro from a friend and just started shooting. Should have shot this at a narrower aperture.

Here's one from me. Yellow food colouring dropped into blue coloured water. This is a collision of two drops. As the first hits the blue water and bounces back up the second drop collides with it. I did this all by hand (no sound/ IR trigger) so I got about 10 keepers out of about 360 shots this session. The moment is captured by triggering the flash only while the shutter is open in a darkened room. Takes a LOT of patience but it's pretty cool when you get a good one.

Of course mine isn't real macro, since it is nowhere near 1:1, but I guess it just fits in here better than in best nature...

It was really hard to get this bee/wasp whatever it may be, in focus(FF really has great DOF [:D], which isn't always that easy to control)... I used AF and it was hunting a LOT, but then I couldn't use MF because it was flying to inaccurate...sigh, it gave me a hard time, but I like the end-result!

I wouldn't call this one of my 'best' macro shots, but I found the subject interesting - seeing this little fungus (about 1 cm in diameter) immediately suggested a particular Florida landmark...

Denise, great work in PP with the flower. Like the contrast of it with the back ground.

John, that pollen (I assume) chunk is a great catch. I have never seen anything like that before.

These were all taken with 7D, 100mm macro, with 2 kenko 1.4tc stacked. Sharpened in PP and bump in a little contrast and slightly sharpened. Very happy with the results and didn't have to get ridiculously close. These are very slightly cropped.

Lovely shot of a most interesting plant John. I actually planted a couple in the back yard and hopefully they start blooming soon. It seems to be the only flower, around the lake that we visit frequently, butterflies land on. I am trying to find another place as the boys are getting tired of the same walk.

Here are a couple from yesterday a little further down from the location. This guy has had a long tough live. He has faded much more than the others I have seen and actually missing parts of his wings. Posted the last picture to show that (it has a little camera shake).

LOL...no not at all. I am from Nebraska. Sorry I keep stealing your thunder and I wouldn't say my photos look better than yours. As a matter of fact, the White butterfly pictures are great!!!!! I have never seen those before. Nice find. I took a break from the butterflies and happened to catch a fly. I was watching a spider have a snack and this guy landed next to the tunnel. Thought he was a goner too, but the spider was too occupied. I will post those pictures when I get them edited. I am starting to really like my new set up. 7D, 100mm macro (old version) 2 Kenko 1.4xTC stacked and 36mm Kenko extension tube.

Taken with my Minolta 50mm f/1.7, XTi, wide open, 12mm exstention tube. I really like the glowing affect the thin DOF provides. I did absolutely no post proccessing except down-rezing and a small amount of sharpening.

That is some great detail in your fly Denise. Great shot. I like how you can see the little hairs all over his body. I am having a hard time with DOF at the moment and getting enough light. I think I am going to need to work on my flash modifier a little.

John, really like the flower. The dreamy OOF on your lens makes the picture even better. I am a big fan of the very small DOF and creamy background with flowers. Some of the best I have seen are on another forum and the guy uses the 85mm 1.2 with some tubes. They are amazing.

Here are three recent shots. When you can't get close enough without disturbing the critter, try using the 672 mm F/5.6 macro, i.e. 7D with 300 mm F4L IS and 1.4x. Well, Ed - to be technically correct, if you're including the crop factor effect on focal length you need to include it on aperture as well, so what you have is a672 mm f/9lens in terms of FF equivalence.

Fortunately, grasshoppers aren't too easy to disturb, and this one didn't seem to mind me getting right up close...

The F/9 would be for depth of field purposes but it lets in light like an F/5.6 for increased shutter speed. For me, if I'm up that close, I'm looking for both speed to freeze the critter (and my hand movement) and depth of field to grab some extra detail. For the right situation, it can be a win-win.

Yes, you would get a shutter speed of f/5.6 but the noise would be the same as f/9 on a full-frame or f/5.6 noise on a 1.6. The noise would be about the same.

John

Are you sure about that? The F/9 applies for depth of field equivalent to full frame is an optical measure. Noise is a function of signal processing of the light picked up by the sensor. I don't understand how differing depths of field in a lens affect the signal processing of the light falling on the sensor to affect noise in shots with good exposures.

I don't understand how differing depths of field in a lens affect the signal processing of the light falling on the sensor to affect noise in shots with good exposures.

It's not the DoF that affects noise, but rather it's the relationship between lens iris diameter and sensor size that affects noise and diffraction (as well as DoF). The f-number is a lens property only - the ratio of focal length to iris diameter - it'sindependent of sensor size. So, if you set f/5.6 on a particular lens on 1.6x FOCVF body and a FF body, the iris diameter is going to be the same, and thus the light per unit area leaving the back of the lens will be the same. As you stated, Ed, "Noise is a function of signal processing of the light picked up by the sensor." Because aFF sensorhas a larger area, itwill capture <span>more of the light exiting the back of the lens. More total light means less noise. So, f/9 on FF will have similar noise as f/5.6 on a 1.6x crop, and the corollary to that is for the same f-number, the crop sensor will have more noise and more diffraction. In a previous post, Daniel explained this quite well ("/forums/p/1212/8412.aspx#8412).

Found a Gum Emperor Moth perched in the open during the day. I think it's a female given the antennae are not overly feathered but I'm no entemologist.

It's wings are quite tatty so perhaps it flew across the Tasman from Steve U's back yard to get some sunshine! Couldn't get a shot when it had the lower wings unfurled to show their spots unfortunately.

Thanks Mark! As the kit lens was physically reversed and the only valid EXIF info are: ISO 400, 1/200, built-in flash fired at I think -1/3 (can't remember), distance from subject -- extremely close..

Here's a blog post ("http://mrgreenbug.blogspot.com/2011/02/macro-by-reverse.html) I made for this: Macro By Reverse ("http://mrgreenbug.blogspot.com/2011/02/macro-by-reverse.html).

Yesterday I got my 100L, and today I went for a long hike to try it out.

So here are two of my first, and therefore by definition: best macro shots ;-)

Both hand-held (my new tripod hasn't arrived yet), 5D2, ISO 800, f/11, and the feather just happened to be attached to the twig, I wonder who lost it...

Btw, looking at some of the other pictures: I'll be trying out focus-stacking soon...

And one question: Today I only saw one beetle, and he scampered off before I could try out whether a polariser would make the specular reflections less harsh, any experience with that?

Nice shots Colin, I especially like the bee shot. How are you liking the 100L

Thanks!

I really enjoyed running around with the 100L because I could finally move in to everything as close as I wanted. The AF is a joy, super fast and precise, except when you start with the focus being too far off, then it just sits there and does nothing. Btw, I find the focus-limit switch unintuitive, would have expected a different order of the switch positions with "everything" in the middle.

If it performs well enough for portraits I can sit out however long it takes for a 135L f/2 IS to arrive ;-) But I can already say that there won't be any buyers remorse regarding the 100L... Even though it's a bit too short to act as my outdoor-hiking-do-everything, but I knew that already because even my 70-200 is often too short for how I'm currently shooting landscapes. 100L + 300L would be perfect for me (or 100L + 100-400), but that'll have to wait a bit.

Great shot Denise. Very nicely outlined drop.

Your shots are always so colourful, your macros in particular, from looking through your flikr photos a while ago. Part would be that you do a great job of limiting to one or two bold colours. I know you shoot raw and I believe you use DPP, so I was wondering whether you set the saturation quite high or anything else in post that gives these colourful results? Or is it just well executed lighting and isolating the subject?

Paul.

Thanks, Paul!

I try to make the colors look as close to what the subject looks like to me in real life. If I do any adjustments in post, I usually have a program make adjustments automatically and 9 times out of 10, I change the adjustments &amp; tone down the saturation because I don

For Me, Failure once more. This morning I went to take a shower and found a little black spider in the tub---Well, now armed with my new 100L macro---I thought "what a great time to put this bad boy to good use". So I captured the spider in a little tupperwear dish and went ahead and took my shower. Afterwords, I began my full setup for this spider macro shot. The plan was to set up on my kitchen counter tops (Black Granite)--- tripod, tripple flash, 24 mm extension tube, orange background (posterboard), remote shutter release---spent 30 minutes getting the lighting just right, focus dead on, etc. Now its time to put my tiny model to work. Soooo, with remote in one hand, I grabbed the tupperwear dish and gently sprinkled the little guy out on the spot I had marked---All the time listening to the wife tell me "YOU BETTER NOT LET HIM LOOSE IN MY KITCHEN"----Well, all I can say is that he is now, LOOSE IN THE KITCHEN. The moment he hit the orange posterboard, he was gone, fastest little guy I have ever seen. Yes, I looked, She looked, for an hour, we looked, but no luck. Black spider on black countertops disappear with ease.

So I thought to myself, well, no use in wasting this setup, Lets go find a bug--After another hour of looking under every rock in the yard, behind every appliance, tool or box in the garage and I even looked in the water meter housing out buy the sidewalk---No luck, no bugs anywhwere. Now I am told it

I took a 500D close-up lens to China with me for use on my 70-200mmII, rather than packing the 100mm L Macro for the relatively limited amount of close-up shooting I expected to do. With the MFD of the 70-200 II, the 500D gets it to a respectable 0.60x magnification.

These were shot at a silk brocade factory/museum with the 70-200 II + 500D:

The onmidirectional lighting from a light tent can help. You can buy one like this ("http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/639276-REG/Creative_Light_100897_20_Light_Shed.html), or make one yourself ("http://www.digital-photography-school.com/how-to-make-a-inexpensive-light-tent).

On our recent stay at a lodge in the Ecuadorian jungle, I was absolutely amazed at all the little critters that come out, especially at night. I brought along a Canon G12, but never realized how good it is at macro photography. A small sensor can achieve much greater depth of field and much closer focus than an SLR, with of course some sacrifice in image quality. Take this shot, for example, of the world's largest ant species.

Many of them do focus very close. But DOF is not a function of sensor size. A DLSR with a lens used at the same aperture and with the same equivelant focal length would have exactly the same DOF.

Take this shot, for example, of the world's largest ant species.

How big was the ant? I was in Borneo some years ago and saw a *really* big one. I took a picture (with my G2... I guess that hints at just how many years ago....) of one of them, but it is too lame to post.

I find ants really tough because they move so fast... I don't know how you got that close focusing camera close enough to get this shot. Nice work.

There a lot of great shots in this thread. So last month when I was buying a new 24-105L, I told my wife I would like to get a Macro lens some day. She told me to go ahead and get it... so I bought a 100mm L. It has done nothing but snow here so I have not had much of a chance to try it out. Well it was still snowing this week. I ended up going to an indoor garden about 80 miles away so I could try it out today. They also had a butterfly exibit also. I am real happy I bought this macro.

Here are a few shots from today (with a 7D). I hope you enjoy the viewing.

Maybe the flower is flatter (or bigger) than it looks, but that seems like a lot of DOF for f/9. The whole thing is sharp.

Nice flower, Andy!!

Ok, so today probably wasn't the best day for me to go out and take some macro shots considering how windy it was but I couldn't fight the temptation any longer!! My garden is starting to bloom!! But also being out there made me realize how much yard work I have ahead of me for the next month!

I have absolutely no trees in my yard. So, last fall I went and planted a baby Japanese Cherry Tree right in the middle of my backyard ...this bud is from that tree! Living where I do, this tree is extremely uncommon and I am surprised it survived the harsh winter we just went thru!I can't wait to see all the beautiful blossoms it produces!!

that seems like a lot of DOF for f/9. The whole thing is sharp.

I think there are three factors that helped to make it look sharp.
There was no motion of the camera or subject during the exposure. There was no wind and I used a tripod with a 2 second delay on the shutter release.
I set up the shot so that the edge of the petal in the 9 o'clock position was in the same plane as the centre of the flower. I cropped the other petals that were out of focus.
The image has been downsized for viewing here, which increases the perceived depth of field.
The shooting distance was 530mm, so the calculated DOF is only 3mm. The flower wasn't as flat as that.

No question about that. But I also think you positioned the focal plane quite nicely (#2)

Hi Jason, What's intersting about the mosquito shot are those 4 tiny blue bugs on the wing (left side)!

Rich

Rich, I agree on the 4 tiny little bugs...I wasn't sure what they were. There were a couple of other dead mosquitoes in the water and they had bugs around them also. I thought maybe they were babies or something like that. This was the only mosquito that had it's wings extended so it got my attention. I wish I had the MP-E 65mm lens since the macro with tubes just couldn't get close enough.

Denise, I really like your comp of the daffodil, but I think it would have been a great picture if the top wasn't chopped off. I have a horrible time making sure things aren't cut off on most of my stuff so I sympathize.

I got the EF 100mm f2.8 L IS USM Macro a while back and been learning to use it. A few days back I received some generic extension tubes from eBay and got to try them out yesterday. Below is my current favorite macro shot. The fly (maybe a fruit fly?) was very small, only a couple of millimeters long. I scavenged some dead insects from inside of my kitchen lamp for the test :D

Mark,

I'm sorry to say that your rose petals look like a red smudge on my (calibrated) PC monitor, but on my MacBook it's a beautiful image. You've obviously captured it well to get the detail that I see on the Mac, but I wonder how you've processed the image for it to look so different on a PC. I've never seen such a difference in any other image between two monitors. Not being critical, just curious.

Here are some of my recent macro shots for anyone to critique

Mark,

The problem was operator error at my end. In hindsight, I should have checked this out before posting last Thursday. I re-did the calibration and it turns out there was a problem saving the calibration, so it reverted to an uncalibrated default (i.e. oversaturated). I had just clicked on 'OK' without reading the error messages. It's sorted now and looks just as good as you intended.

Denise,

I'm glad your garden survived the late snowfall. I'm sure those flowers will soon be attracting lots of insects for you to seek out with the macro lens.

Here's one from yesterday. Not a true macro, but shot within the macro range of the 24-70mm.

neuroanatomist,

I could never let that insect crawl across my hand. When I was a child all the neighborhood kids including me would play with the big green cecedias where I picked one up a few years ago to tease my dogs and it somehow bit me or poked me where it really hurt. I will never pick up another one of those for the rest of my life God willing. Anything that has more then 8 legs is off limits as well.

For this I used the Canon 85mm f/1.8 coupled with a 36mm Kenko extension tube (I would say I find the 36mm tube most useful, and I usually pair it with the 85mm f/1.8 or 50mm f/1.4). I bought the extension tubes used from Ebay, and they work perfectly (they are $180 new, and I think I paid $95 for them). There are cheaper alternatives, but I like the Kenko tubes and they were certainly worth what I paid for them.

Denise, those are some great flies. I think they are hover flies...correct me if I am wrong. Thanks for the compliment on the dew. I have been trying for refractions, but I don't have any flowers in my yard. Have to head to the in-laws for that.

Qwrad, I like that spider shot. Maybe add a little contrast and boost up the exposure a hair and you have a great looking shot.

John, Your 3 year old is finding some cool stuff. I remembered holding on to those when I was a little. Just don't let her start picking up frogs!

I have a couple from a bug I found in the basement the other day. Little irritated that he made his way into the house, but since he passed on, I decided not to squish him and have a mini portrait session. Used a 100mm macro USM, with full set of kenko extension tubes with a 580ex II flash.

Some of the later shots were better IQ (1/50s was shaking a bit in the wind, and DOF only a few mm), but i like the pose in this one.

7D, efs 15-85, 85mm, f9, 1/50s, ISO1000. CameraJPG, 1/3 scale, crop to 4*3, no noise reduction, enhancing, or anything else.

Wow! Some really nice shots lately!! Jayson, I don't think a photo of a bug could get any sharper ...nice job!

I spent alot of time in the yard today with my macro lens and kenko extension tubes. For a few shots, I even used the tripod, angle finder c and macro slider. I found out that my photos are sharper of course but it also was a pain in the rear to try and move around with! Also, it sure would be nice if the angle finder c moved toward you insted of just to the side! Wasn't long before I went backto my old way of doing things!

After looking around in the flowers and bushes for bugs ...I found out my bushes are infested with aphids! Ewwww! I also found a few bugs I never saw before.

Could someone please tell me what the heck this is ....

Amazing photos Denise, really excellent stuff! Love the shot of the big colorful green/golden fly and my other favorite is the green guy with the transparent wings, nice pose on that one. And wow that really is a scary and awesome looking insect at the same time in the first two pics, no idea what it is though :)

Thanks qwRad! I had a busy day macro shooting! I was never much of a bug lady until I took up photography! Now I've found that they can be pretty interesting to watch! I hope that unidentified one isn't anything to worry about ...hopefully he is here to eat the aphids!

Today was the first day of real, outdoor macro shooting for me. What fun! These were all taken in a patch of decorative mint that seems to attract all kinds of critters.

I believe the 4th shot captured insects in the act of making more insects....

All shots with a 7D and 100L Macro. Thanks for viewing!

Great shots Denise.

The Kingb, that first one is killer. Great shot! The mating one is a great shot too, however this is a family site...[:O]

Here is some recent stuff from my deck...

This guy had passed on, but the boys found him very interesting. So it was portrait time. Didn't realize a June bug was hairy on the underside...

This is my favorite spider picture to date. Just wish I could have captured his eyes in focus. That would have made it the best. This guy was hard to catch since he was moving constantly and was about the size of nails head. He was tiny! Used a 100mm Macro with 36 extension tubes and a 1.4x TC and still had to crop a little bit.

Denise, I really like your entire first set on this page. The DOF that you have captured really brings us into this little bugs world!

King, Very strong set as well. I love the contrasts and colors and as well as the creamy backgrounds!

Jayson, I love the colors and low angle perspective of #4 , as well as the sharpness and eye contact in #5!

Neuro, Your 1st and 2nd shots are incredible. All I can say is WOW! I love the color and composition of both of them, and I love the spider web, dew drops, highlights, and especially the reflection of the bush in the water droplet (towards the right side of the frame) in the 2nd image. Great... thanks, now this will be the 2nd lens that you will force my to buy, with the 85mm f/1.2L, being the first. [;)]Then, I suppose I will also need the MT-24EX and a FF camera. [:P]

Just trying out some macro thingy with an 85mm, some extension tubes, and a third-party flash. The result:
<p style="text-align: center;"]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-O5a0i0sWHMA/TgbL-qhu42I/AAAAAAAAPFY/WbTlTipC-zY/s640/IMG_0030.JPGhttps://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-sx2qNhecTQ4/TgbL8dV2nnI/AAAAAAAAPFQ/v3VqqTOhjY8/s640/IMG_0019.JPG
<p style="text-align: center;"]https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-JitaENQg7Qs/TgbNAFdaatI/AAAAAAAAPGQ/G9rcjzZcgqs/s640/IMG_0041.JPG

The extension tubes were quite a bit a hassle as it was dummy and I had to manually focus by moving forward or backward and really look into the VF hard. I'm not sure if this really how extension tubes work. The really shallow DOF was a challenge but I enjoyed the new experience.

Another thing to get more consistent output in the MR-14EX would be to use a manual flash. I think maybe the ETTL is pumping out a little much in the last picture. Maybe try a defuser also. They all look really good and spot on.

I haven't seen a commercially available diffuser for the MR-14EX - probably because there's sort of one already built in (the flash tubes have a translucent cover, compared to most flashes, including the MT-24EX, where the cover is transparent).

Time to get this thread moving again! It's been 2 weeks since the last post.

My 3 and a half year old son came running to me this afternoon, excited about the "huge bug" he found in the sandbox. Turns out it was a pretty big beetle (2" long I'd say). A little internet research shows that it's a reddish-brown stag beetle. He was alive and well and not that interested in being photographed, so our time together was short.

It's some kind of native australian wasp having a nomnom on the

wish i'd had my cpl on there too). now every night i leave the setup by
the back door to get outside faster if i see anything else flying
around, the flowers look like they'll last another month maybe.

Between the flowers swaying in the wind, Manual Focus because of the

this was one of only a few focussed on anything good. I want a 100L

This unique insect was on my porch tonight eating insects under the porch light. Like I mentioned before insects creep me out big time but they do make for interesting macro subjects. At first I could not get this guy to settle down as I would set him down and he would race to the edge of the table and take a nose dive to the floor. Stuck it in the fridge for 15 minutes to try and slow him down where it did not work like I wanted. Finally got him to settle down for a moment to get some decent shots and then released it back out into the yard. 5D2, 100mm IS macro, no extensions tubes, almost no cropping, shutter 1/20, av f/18.

Just introduce them to a Chinese beetle. I found out that the Japanese people don't like the Chinese and vice versa. they will get pretty upset if you associate one with the other. If that holds true then the Jap beetles should jump ship. All joking aside you need a chemical spray from the lawn and garden store. As for my bug I have been unable to identify it. I sent pictures to a few of the insect sites online and they could not provide any identification.

Looks like your doing about as good with your bug as i am with mine! As for mine, I haven't found a commercial product that works yet ...plus with three dogs, spraying chemicals in the backyard is a problem. So, I guess I'm stuck with holey leaves and rose petals! One thing I saw today though, the birds I attract to the yard like to eat them so I guess there is a natural way to get rid of them!

When I was at Walmart looking for some insect spray for my plants I saw many that listed being able to kill Japanese beetles. Many brands are safe to spray and once the spray dries in an about an hour its safe for pets, and the wild birds. There are also many that are safe to spray on fruit and veggies while they are growing where all you need to do is wash the food before you eat. I bought a cool plant that was doing so well and then one day I came out and it was stripped of just about every leaf it had over night. It basically looked like a skeleton and it broke my heart. I ended up buying The Garden Safe brand insect killer which states its kills on contact where my new plant shows very little signs of being nibbled on. If you have outdoor plants and even indoor insect killer is a must.

Hi Freelance,

I sent pictures to a few of the insect sites online and they could not provide any identification.

my guess is its a brown prionid beetle - Orthosoma brunneum

We get them in my neck of the woods too in summer. Quite large - about 3 inches body length. My late cat used to have a ball with them......ha ha ha. I tell you, I think the beetle was tougher than the cat!

Cheers,

Damian

I found this lying down on the lawn. Usually I thought these flowers were extremely common and uninteresting but this one seemed special.

The guys at bugguide.net suggested that its a male Prionus Imbricornis or Tiled-horned Prionus. I had never seen one like this before but I have not lived in Arkansas that long plus I've only been living on the other city limits for about a year. Thanks Damian for your info.

The one that I photographed was about 1 1/2 inches long and he really creeped me out. It would take a lot for me to let one crawl across my arm or in my hand.

The Orthosoma brunneum have some big mandibles as I would not want to get pinched by one. I could see how it looks pretty close to the Prionus Imbricornis but the main difference is the anntenae with the different segments and it seems to be longer.

Ya! Sure looks like it. What a great website!

BTW awesome shot - that 100mm Macro is amazing (and your technique too). I recently tried out the 500d close-up lens on my 50 1.4 and was really happy but looking at what your 100mm can do is just awesome.

Happy bug shooting.

Spider that I took a moment to photograph while out in the wilderness late night. Breeze was blowing its web in and out where focus was a crap shoot.
