I was out two days after thanksgiving and nabbed a few candid portraits with my family. Its fun being around family, and having a slightly longer lens, people aren't running as much :) All the pictures were on an XTi, and the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 Macro EX lens hand-held ISO 400.

Sorry for the length of the post. I haven't shot people in a while (at least not with a camera), so I'm excited. Critique away.

@Whatsreal: Good choice of lens! It's one of my top 3 lenses and a dark-horse favourite. A bit heavy to hand-hold, though...especially with the Rebel body - I bet the lens outweighs the body! I use mine with 1D Mk IIs with great result, as much a portrait lens as a macro still life lens. The reach of the lens really helps in being the unobtrusive portrait photographer. You get people to relax a bit more, I think. Congrats on the shots, your composition is good!

@Rob: Thanks. It is currently my favorite lens as my other one is the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 II. That is why you don't see to many wide angle pictures from me ;) And yes the XTi does kinda dangle off the back of the lens. I don't find it too heavy, maybe because the body is so light it compensates. On a crop body the 210mm equivalence is nice. I kinda am drooling over both the 17-55 2.8 and a longer lens (3-400 range), but those are in the distant future (something about the $xxxx + books I spent out of pocket for seminary this year)

Here's two from Thanksgiving weekend while I was in California with the 35L. I'm ashamed at myself I didn't use my camera and that amazing lens more while I was there. These are the only two photo's that came out good, out of less than 10 I actually took. [:(] I'm probably going to get the 35L again for Christmas or try out the 24L II.

A small note; I'm a bit puzzled as to why these two photo's had so much noise when I took them at ISO100...? It isn't reallynoticeableon these resized ones, but it's reallyapparenton the full sizes.

Here's my view - I don't care how many shots it takes to get the look I'm going for, as long as I get it (or something reasonably close). In the days of film, such a technique would have been cost prohibitive. With digital, I'm only sacraficing a little more of my time and a bit more wear on my shutter. If I shoot 80 shots, and the customer really likes 5 of them, then I've likely given them more than they would have gotten at a chain studio for less money.

Keith,

Excellent portrait.

I can only see one thing missing. Hair Light.

That little bit of light from high above rear, I find, serves to complete the seperation of thethe subject from the background. 3D Baby!!

The side light is awesome and I think positioned well. With a hair light you could pull the side light around a little and turn it down.

For a two light setup, you nailed it. Kim (my wife) and I recently did some outdoor bridal portraits and that setup worked really well.

Love the mottled grey backdrop. Where'd you get it? The next investment I make in photo equipment needs to be in backdrops.

I'm going to dinner (on the road with contract work - 190 miles from home [:(]), check back in later.

Keith B
12-18-2009, 12:38 AM
Thanks Chuck!

It was actually a 3 light shot. I'm not a fan of the direct hair light. It tends to make things look a little glam and not what I was going for.

I normally would have gotten the side light up a little higher to hit more on top of the head but the space wouldn't allow it. I used a Ray Flash for a fill to give it some dimension and 36" Softlighter II for Key. All powered by 580EXIIs.

The background is just a black seamless. i think the combo of the ring light and the soflighter give it the mottled look.

Still loving that Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 wide angle. Today, however, I got a new toy to go with it--the Delkin Fat Gecko Camera Mount. I think this was the most fun I've ever had doing a self-portrait.

strobist: 1 Canon 580EX, 1/2 power, 1/2 CTO gelled, positioned to my right, diffused by a Fong Lightsphere. 1 Vivitar 285, 1/16 power, 1/2 CTO gelled, laying in the back seat pointed at the ceiling, bare. Flashes and camera triggered via Cybersyncs. Camera attached to hood using a Delkin Fat Gecko camera mount.

Yep, I took the portrait while driving. I used a Cybersync CSRB connected to the camera via a motor cord from flashzebra. The connected to the camera was triggered using a CST in my right hand (which is also working the gearshift). When I fire the shutter using the handheld CST, the CST on the camera's hotshoe would fire the strobes. It was alot of work to set up, but I was happy with the results. ;-)

You know, I wasn't quite sure when I started looking at the mount just after opening the box. However, I took it outside and attached my backup camera (XTi) and it felt pretty solid. Then I mounted my 50D once nightfall came and did the setup for real. I was still really nervous about driving while my camera was perched on the corner of my hood. I was driving through Tennessee Technological University (where I graduated from) where the speed limit is 15 miles per hour. I did not exceed the speed limit.

I think this is the perfect use for my wide angle lens. I've been loving it ever since I got it, but now it's just that much more useful to me. I can't imagine how many kids will want their senior portraits taken like this... ;-)

Hey Sean, thanks.

I was using only what was available to me at the time. It was a 3strobe setup. I was using a stripbox to the right and a little forward set at f5.6, another stripbox behind leftset at f8, and the third strobe with a 20 degree gridfor the background set at f8. I would have used a large softbox with a grid (to control the spill on the background) on the rightif I had it available but it was being used at the time. I also had planned on using a 4th light as a hair light butfelt it was unnecessary for the shots.

This is a small photoshoot i did at my house, with a curtain as my backdrop, a softbox on my left side and a umbrella on the right. I was testing the flashes since im a novice into photography. I had a major problem since the T1i doesn't have a PC sync i had to shoot the flash on the camera and rely on the trigger by light of the flash.

<div style="CLEAR: both"]</div>

I think it's terrific Rodger. My only critique is that I find the harsh shadow cast by the bare Vivitar camera left a little distracting. I'd like to see what it would look like if you either:

Moved the subject off the wall a little bit and stopped down to retain the definition in the wood. (edit: you may need to light your background separately though if you took this approach)
Used another umbrella for your fill

That is completely just personal taste though and takes nothing away from your picture. I think it's time to start charging more than $50 for these!!! Great job.

Rodger
01-07-2010, 11:25 AM
I agree that the harsh shadow is distracting. It didn't show up on my LCD when I was checking the shots :( I thought the 430EXII would drown the Vivitar's shadow out a bit more than it did.

I probablycould have/should have gone with a softbox on the vivitar as it was too windy for another umbrella (I had a friend hold the 430EXII steady).

Thanks for your input Mark!!

Keith B
01-07-2010, 11:41 AM
I wouldn't mind the hard shadow so much if it was lower than the subject, as from a higher light source.

I'm not a fan of the post. I think it needs some texture, some grit, to pull that style off. Other than those little things I like it.

Exif and such:

F8.0 ISO 100 1/125 XTi w/ 24-70 F2.8 Cactus KF36 bounced out of an umbrella full power to the right, behind the wall and a 430ex at 1/16 (i think) camera left behind the wall bare. Comments/critiques are much appreciated.

I love the black foreground! I might have moved her to the [camera] left side and into the larger opening. That would give her a body rather than just a neck and head. Love the lighting you used though!

That looks like a veryy fun place to shoot!

I wouldn't mind the hard shadow so much if it was lower than the subject, as from a higher light source.

Frick. You're absolutely right. Ahh what's that saying? hindsight is 20/20? I'll have to remember that for next time. (Not sure why I broke the standard "light from above" rule here).

I think it needs some texture, some grit, to pull that style off.

Do you think some light brushing in CS4 with a "grunge" set would do the trick? Or possibly some more on the "clarity" slider in LR2 (just on the background). I do agree with you now on second thought. It seems a bit "smooth" overall for the lower saturation and hefty vignette.

Thanks for your advice Keith!

I have some similar to that but it was so cold (25-30 degrees) we didn't really have much choice in wearing something that would really look that good. we've made plans to go back when its warmer haha.

it's a great place to shoot, most of the plaster is falling apart, theres wholes everywhere in the walls, it's an all around amazing find [:P], it's just really dark since its all boarded up.

Hmm. I think I probably desaturate the blues a little more and then mess with the Orange channel, darken, desaturate and increase the contrast a little, to give the skin a metallic quality. I increase the black point a little and maybe add some contrast.

In PS I'd duplicate the layer then add some noise (monochrome) then play with the layer blending modes to get something that works. That will give it some grit. Try your ideas too. They might work better. Don't know until you try.

Keith B
01-08-2010, 01:51 AM
I messed with it real quick. I just played with the (un)saturation, darkened the red, blue and cyan channels.I duped the layer thenadded some contrast to the whole thing, then masked the whole layer and then reversed painted cheeks, eyes etc. to give more contrast with out making it too dark.

You can probably do a lot better with the RAW. Especially with the color tones. On this low rez images adding noise didn't work.

Really? I totally dig this photo! I love the tonal range and her expression. I know she's not really looking at anything, and I'm sure she'sthinking "Can you please hurry this up so I can get back to ..." but the composition makes me want to know what she's looking at. I really feel a lot of emotion from thisphoto. What was the EXIF? Was the light source a window?

Thanks Lewis.

Actually she was looking out the window observing the weather, nothing planned expression wise. It has been out of the ordinarily cold here in FL and it was rainy so she was just looking. I had just been clicking away for a few frames before. The window is the sole light source.

The full rez is quite breathtaking as far as color and detail. It is really unbelievable for a shot at 1.4. I am so tickled with the 35L. If they are going to upgrade this lens, good luck there isn't much room for improvement.

My pleasure Rodger.

I'm looking forward to see the next version of that shot.

It's funny talking about the window light and strobes. When I first started shooting way back when, most of my favorite shots were natural light. Anton Cobjin was my hero loved the stuff he shot of U2 for the Joshua Tree. So everything I shot, I was trying to emulate that. Years later I get back into photography, working with with studio photographers (they were obsessed with f/8 and ISO100) and all the fancy strobes I became obsessed with them. Now, I no longer would depend on the sun I'll make my own. All my shots started looking synthetic and it was everything my photographic instinct wasn't. Along the way I became so obsessed with the strobes, I kind of forgot what natural light looked like and that essentially you want your strobes to match natural light as much as possible.

I have been hell bent on trying to make my strobes match natural light (as much as possible) and now I finding my strobe shots are flat.

So I'm trying to retrain myself, leaving the strobes in the case and working with natural light. Then I'll ad a strobe here and there and try and find that balance.

<span style="font-size: medium; color: #0000ff;"]Like taking portrait shots? Just post them and share with us!

This is, as I consider, one of my best portraits I've ever taken. On campus of University of Toronto (University College), Canada, early 2008. Open for comments &amp; suggestions /emoticons/emotion-1.gif

Some notes: Toronto's winter is always quite cold. As I remember, there were a couple of unusual warm days before the day when this picture was taken; that's why snow was melted and the ground can be seen. However, at the moment when I was taking this picture it was about -10 degrees... The ground was frozen and I was lying on it toachieve such a perspective.

<span style="font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;"]I really like the shots you share. I don't know if you were looking for any feedback so forgive me if you weren't but I felt compelled to comment on a couple things with this one.

<span style="font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;"]1) I think the ambient on-axis is a little strong overall and is shining too brightly in her ear.

<span style="font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;"]2) I like the comp, but her pose, though strong, proud and jaw/neck enhancing leaves me looking up into her nose. If she slightly cocked her her back toward you or if you were able to take the shot from a little higher up this could remedy the problem. Even #1 would help by taking the on-axis fill down a 1/2 to 1 full stop.

<span style="font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;"]These things are very picky but worth a mention.

Feedback is always fine. I have been a food/product/editorial photographer for some time and I am now working on my portrait stylings so C&amp;C is welcome.

It's funny the 2 things you pointed out are the two things I have issue with image too. I have other shots from the sitting posed as you described, but my girlfriend has become very impatient with my photography and using her as a guinea pig so it is like photographing a child; I have a window of about 2 minutes before she in twitching and goose necking toward the t.v. I would have like to change the fill light but no way would she have waited for me to set up a light. I thought about fixing the ear in post but I got lazy. I'll post a different angle later.

You nailed it! And thanks.

Like I mentioned above I had limited time, I would have liked to have put a small shoot through choked way down behind her so I got better gradation of the hot spot. I actually had to push the shadow level in post, so on the original you kind of see banding again (not going to complain because it could have been avoided).

Keith one more tiny detail. Try to get the entire head in the shot. I don't know if I'm the only one noticing, but I don't like cut of bodyparts in photos. I think if you showed the top of her head as well it would make the image stronger.

Except of course if you're trying to make a special composition where you deliberately cut of some limbs or other bodyparts.

At least that's what I am trying to work on lately. It happens to me all the time, because I'm focussing on other things during the shoots, but it is something to be beware of. Take the entire shot, not a bit of it [A]

Crop was intentional. I was trying different crops as I was clicking away. This shot just grabbed me.

I use to focus so much on getting everything in. This was a big thing shooting editorial stuff because designers always wanted plenty of room to crop in the layouts. I think sometimes if you get too much in the image loses impact. I think it is really about the purpose of the shot. Like on this shot, I have always loved her profile and cheek bones so I was really trying to draw focus to them in a "rip-off Dan Winters" sort of way (I missed but that is why this is practice). I feel too much or any space above and behind her would detracted from that. If I had more time I would have like to adjusted light to make her neck and clavicle more shadowy and use them to draw the eye more toward her jaw. Probably would have shadowed out her nose a bit too.

I like the second one quite a bit better. She has a magnificant profile, and it shines in the second one. I always enjoy the shots you take of her...

I'm a big fan of your work so that means a lot.

Ahlea is very petite. I have shots of her from the same sitting where she is wearing a sweater but it was making her look very small so I asked if she could just put on a robe and let drape off her shoulders. Her attitude dropped substantially after that. It was a little chilly and I think she wanted to watch Chuck.

With the sweater. I like the angle better. I think I got married to the idea the shoulder made in more interesting. I had the ring powered down a little more here too. Another instance where the LCD failed me. On screen it looked to dark.

Keith,

I don't know anything, but I think the last one with the sweater is the best. I think you did a great job capturing the contrast between the well-lit front of her face and the left side, and the gradient behind her is perfectly silhouetting her form, not bringing attention to itself, but not allowing the back oh her to fade formlessly into a shadow. Also, the color of the sweater is a great complement to the background and her natural skin and hair, which brings something to the palette that I feel was missing by comparison in the first shots.

I was doing a "light check" for a shoot that I had to do later the same day. My father-in-law was kind enough to step in for me and I ended up really like this portrait.

Thank you Mark. All were done with studio flash (so not a strobist setup) in the studio though.

Miss World shot uses a ring flash and nothing else.

The one that looks like an old painting uses two soft boxes one as a main and one as a fill (which is not the way Dan Winters does it by the way: he uses one soft box to the right and uses a ring to fill).

The black &amp; White portraitw of the guy with the chains uses just one soft box on this face, and a slight bounce on the left.

Very basic stuff actually.

Lighting on the subjects looks good and the framing is all good but the background look could probably be improved.

I'd suggest firing a flash directly at the sheet behind them to blow it out more and give a bit of rim lighting through the hair etc. The sheet just needs to be flattened out a bit so the folds in the top left of frame aren't visible.

The emotion is great though - it's obvious the two of them were comfortable with you shooting them which is a big part of getting natural emotion out of portraits.

twistedphrame
03-09-2010, 01:24 AM
yeah background is my big gap in my setup, i don't quite have the capital for anything decent either in materials or supports so I wind up jerry-rigging everything.

Rodger
03-09-2010, 01:58 AM
Twistedframe,

Great timing on the shot! The emotion is wonderful.

Buying a cheap steamer would help your background situation too. (I hope you don't mind this) but I would probably angle the chair a bit so that it is not straight on with the camera. The straight on angle is not very flattering for most subjects although I would not say that it detracts from this photo. A little angle adjustment would just make it a bit better in my humble opinion.

Ahh, this is making me want to go shoot portraits! People pictures are my favorite. "I've never met a landscape that I couldn't put a person in front of and thus make it interesting" - Joe McNally :)

Hey Denise,

Glad you could find yourself a willing model :-) What was your setup. It looks like it could use a tad more exposure but that may just be my screen at work. This is just taste but I would try to find a way to get some separation of subject and background. He kind of melts away into the darkness. That may have been what you were going for though. Maybe play with the crop a little too. If you're going to keep it a landscape then I would prefer to see the dead space to the right of him as opposed to the left. Portrait orientation may look nice too.

Keep up the good work and keep shooting! I've really seen a nice progression in your photography over the past couple of months :-)

Hi, this is my first post on this forum. I've been shooting with Panasonic LX-2 for a few years, and moved to Canon 500D with kit lens this fall. Since then, I've bought a 50mm 1.8 II, a 430EX-II flash and recently a 17-55 2.8 IS USM (which was the best thing I could've done). I don't have any fancy lighting kit, not even a wireless transmitter, but I do try to follow Neil ("http://neilvn.com/tangents/) van Niekerk ("http://neilvn.com/tangents/) and his advices about using on-camera bounce flash. Last weekend, my lens was generating a bit of an attention which I decided to abuse a bit and get a nice girl to pose (I read some posing tips the other day, and I managed to remember a few points). We both have zero experience with that, so the image has a few flaws I'm aware of (chopped hand, I should've arranged her fingers to be visible):

/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.UserFiles/00.00.00.41.72/final_2D00_crop.jpg

The setup -- 17-55 at 43mm, Manual mode (for control of the lighting), F/2.8 (for the DOF), 1/50s (I wanted some ambient light to register), ISO 800 (arbitrary value, I didn't want to hammer the flash too much and ISO 1600 seemed too much), on-camera flash in TTL, no flash exposure compensation, bounced up and to the right (the 430EX-II won't rotate more than 90&deg; to the right, so I'm pretty sure it was aiming just to the right and about 60&deg; up). Shoot RAW, but the camera got the WB right in this case. The "venue" was a hall in an old (pre-WW1) house in a village, about 2 meters wide, dark brown wooden ceiling and one wall, the other wall which I bounced from was painted white with some obstacles like doors. RAW-&gt;JPEG converted in Canon's Digital Photo Pro running under Wine in Linux, cropped. Further PP in the Gimp, adjusted levels of the red on the face, some cosmetic retouching (eyes, teeth, skin blemishes), skin softening, added vignetting, eye &amp; hair sharpening. This was the first time I was PPing a shot, so it took me about two hours :).

The flaws I'm aware of:

Weird position of the right hand -- the elbow looks kinda strange here (or doesn't it?)
Palm and fingers are not visible, that's a pity IMHO
Some disturbing background stuff on the very right

Still, I was really happy when a strobist friend of mine nodded "hey, nice window lighting" when he saw the shot for the first time, and was rather surprised to hear that it was an on-camera TTL flash :). Any suggestions about how to improve stuff are welcome.

Sean Setters
04-01-2010, 09:32 AM
Welcome to the forum jkt! We're glad to have you here. Personally, I think you did a fantastic job on the exposure (you just enough ambient in). The pose is a bit awkward (having the elbow so much closer to the lens than the face makes it seem disproportionately bigger. In fact, I thought this was shot at the wider end of your 17-55 until I saw "43mm" (which can cause more distortion in your subject). The pose aside, I think you nailed the bounce flash. It does indeed look like window light--it works perfectly with the scene. Overall, well done!

peety3
04-01-2010, 10:23 AM
Welcome JKT! For the sake of mention, if you go with Manual mode and ambient light is a factor in your shot, ISO values aren't "arbitrary": they influence how bright/dark the ambient is just as much as shutter or aperture settings. I'm not sure about the 430II, but I believe some of the newer Canon flashes interpret their color temperature and report that to the camera, so if you have the camera on auto WB it'll be "calibrated" to the flash and unaware of the ambient light.

I just love it and the colors and contrast just beat that of any of my other lenses. It's also a damn for FoV for portraits and the frame is perfect on crop &amp; full frame alike.

Though if I had the dough I'd get the f/1.2 version in a heartbeat. [:P]

I especially like the second one. How is that Sigma 50 1.4. I'm really interested in it but there are tons of mixed reviews of it.

I never liked my Canon 50 1.4 so I sold it. The 1.2 is a little too pricey.

(and maybe bumping the thread will get Jan's attention so he can respond to Keith's Sigma 50mm question). :-)

Haha good one Sean! I already PMed Keith...[:P] But for the record (and perhaps to answer other people with the same question) here it is:

Hey Keith,

thanks for asking about the sigma.

I only tried out the Canon 50mm 1.4 and found out that it wasn't meant for me. Too small, feels cheap and it was totally not usauble at f1.4

After reading some reviews I thought what the heck, I'm just gonna try the Sigma and if I don't like it, I'll return it.

I Only have had 1 copy, and it is good! I love it!

Yes it had an AF inconsistency. It was frontfocussing and needed micro-adjustment of +9

Luckily for me that was the only flaw. I really enjoy this lens. I also think the 77mm filterthread is very handy and so is the size/weight. It feels good in your hands if your used to somewhat bigger lenses.

I'm not sure what else you are particularity interested in. If you want to see samples(full-size) or want to see specific images. I guess I could make a few for you. Just let me know! Because I am so happy with the Sigma that I still can't believe everyone has such major problems with it.

Hope this helps a bit already and I'll be hearing from you I guess?http://community.the-digital-picture.com/emoticons/emotion-2.gif

Great nickname haha! But I guess it's true [A]

That's a great set of photos. I think the first one is the best(not looking technically at the photo). Good material for a portfolio. To be honest I have no clue of strobism [:P]

I also like the 2nd photo. Although I'm not sure what to think of the hair in front of the eye. The third one is my least favorite. I think she looks a bit sad and I personally think she's lit just a bit too light. But I must say I'm not really a fan of strobism and I'm probably very picky! [:P]

Finally not one of me all the time! hahaha [:P]

Had a random, but totally fun shoot with two friends today. I discovered that one of my friends was REALLY REALLY into photography like I am. I thought she was into photography, but not that into it. So we set up a day to just shoot and exchange ideas. This is one of the results of that shoot. This is my friend Bunyi. I called him that morning to see if he was free because he is always a good model/subject. Fortunately he was in the area and would be free just when Gayle and I would be ready to go.

We shot at a great graffiti location I know in Placentia. To my GREAT dismay when we talked over to the location from our cars we found out that they had recently painted over all the graffiti. The walls here (between to industrial buildings) were COVERED in graffiti. From head to toe and not a spot left unsprayed. After searching the entire area (at least a few football fields long) we could only find two or three good tags to use as a background.

I really wanted to pull the colors and texture out of the wall. I hope I did that.

So yeah that's all folks! Buh bye now!

Took these on a recent photo shoot with a good friend for my portfolio.

The Wonderful Wifey was holding a SB-900 mounted atop a painter's pole (thanks Sean for the idea), shot through an umbrella, fired via cybersyncs.

<span>

John,

Thanks to you and your adorable daughter, I purchased the 85mm f/1.2L II and it arrived this week.<span>My Credit Card Company would like to Thank You for having me buy this very expensive lens.[;)]

I'm still testing it out and So far, So good! I can't believe the diameter of the 1.2 aperture, it's huge! I really wanted a low light indoor Lens for events and family photos. One of my employees is getting married on Labor Day weekend and I'm an invited guest. She hired a Photographer, but she also asked me to take candids and I thought this would be the perfect lens for that on my 7D.

<span>I was hoping this Lens would double as an Indoor Basketball and Volleyball Lens, but after trying it around the house that seems to be out of the question, due to the slow Auto Focus and slow Electronic Manual Focus. I guess it takes a long time to move all of that glass. But, I'm sure when used what it was intended for, like Portraits.., the pictures will be absolutely stunning.

Thanks Again,

Rich

If you have a url directly to the image. Click the film strip icon. Paste the URL in the box, optionally enter the dimensions (so the page doesn't re-layout when the image size is found).

It's against the Flickr terms of service to link directly though, they want the image to be a link back to their site. To do that:

1. On flickr, choose the "share this" drop down.
2. Click grab HTML.
3. Select a size that's no wider than 800.
4. Copy the HTML code box.
5. On TDP, click the HTML button (last button).
6. Paste in the HTML code.

Tom,

I think the lighting set up for the black and whites you posted work very well for the man in the hat! It's a great mood/emotion that the subject emits and the lighting emphasizes that greatly! I'm not sure I would use the same lighting for the clarinetist though. Personally, I'd like to see a bit more of the left (viewer's right) side of her face. I'm nit-picking, I hope you don't mind! Again though, fantastic lighting on the man in the hat!

Thanks Jayson!

I actually had fun with shoot for not so obvious reasons. This was the day I finally put my money where my mouth is. The terrain was tough and it would have been really easy to just slap the 24-70 on and zoom about. Instead I committed to the primes and shot everything with either the 50 1.2 or 85 1.2. I can see the difference in IQ and it really did make the shoot a lot more fun.

And, Denise was such a pleasure to work with.

Nah, I think working with those primes definitely paid off, the shots look great. I really like mystique/dreamy-ness in the first one. Just out of curiosity: did you do a lot of lens-swapping during the shoot? I can imagine 85mm and 50mm being pretty close? Or do you have a favorite lens for different circumstances and shots? I couldn't tell if this shot was with a 50mm prime or an 85mm.

Thanks Jan.

I was shooting with 1Ds2 and 5D2I flip flopped them once and I can't remember why. All of those shots I posted are with the 85. I'll post a couple I shot with the 50. I chose focal length based on the terrain. It was really hilly and sometimes I couldn't get the angle I wanted with one lens so grabbed the other body/lens combo. There was also an occasion where I was nestled in the middle of some brush and moving in and out was an option so I used the 50 for full body and the 85 for tight shots. If I could have I would have shot all with the 85 to keep it simple but the 50 was quite handy and definitely no compromise. I had the 35 near by incase I needed it but the 50 was the widest I needed.

Ah of course... that explains a lot. It does make a lot of sense to use 2 camera's at an important shoot.

Those primes seem to make very nice photos. I know I love my 50mm, but still I'm using it too little since the almighty zoom works a lot easier for me in most cases. I'm guessing all of your photos are framed like this and are not cropped? Or slightly perhaps. I can see why the 35mm didn't get any work if it isn't absolutely needed.

I like the second and third photo, that backlighting looks really good. It shows her figure in a gentle way. I like that.

If I'm honest I must say that I'm not a big fan of the first shot. The overall picture doesn't work for me. It almost seems like your model (which is absolutely beautiful) isn't really in harmony with the environment in the shot, while in the other shots you managed to do this very well.

What was your lighting/reflector set-up? during the shoot? I guess the heavy backlighting is sun and you had 1 main-light? And do I see smoke in the first shot?

Overall the last shot of the last 3 is my favorite. And lastly...I'm curious, what's the purpose of this shoot? Is it going to be published/portfolio work/anything other?

Thanks for the explanation and also for showing the 50mm samples Keith. Much appreciated.

All I can say is, commit to the primes! I think the thing that really made me want to switch is just thinking about all the great photo from the past were shot with primes and all the MF guys shoot primes. Once I got the 85L and compared shots to my 70-200 it was easy to see why. I'm still a little surprised Annie Leibovitz uses the 24-70 so much. You'd think with all the control she would have she'd shoot primes.

I'm with you on that full length shot. I want to like but I don't. I was a little exhausted at that point in the shoot and the model wasn't very experienced so I think I gave up. I wanted her crouching down in some fashion but she just wanted to stand on the board. I just posted it to show full length 50mm shot. That is smoke in the background. I think that is why I want to like it so much. I'll post one with a little post on it too. All the shots are uncropped. I have the mentality of, if you didn't nail it in the camera live with it. I hate throwing away pixels.

No use for the 35. Until I got the 50L I use to try to frame shot with the 35 and I was getting too close and it also started to distort features. It's funny when I bought the 35L I was on the fence with a 50 but all the bad reviews of just about every 50 made me lean to the 35. But I'm loving the 50L.

The purpose of the shoot was really just for portfolios. I found a spot that really inspired me so I looked on Model Mayhem for a local girl who needed some port stuff. I wanted some swimsuit shots and I was so tired of the same old beach scenes. I was going to do some other stuff but the model had a very limited wardrobe and the dresses she had were really bad.

The sun was the heavy backlight, the key was a 580EXII in 36" Softlighter with the silver insert. This has become my favorite light. I find it to be very similar to a beauty dish. The FL shot we don't like used same key and 60" umbrella camera right to light the smoke and give a little edge. I also used a 18" shoot thru umbrella for some edge and smoke on other shots. All the 580s were triggered with Radiopopper Jrxs.
