Hi guys,

<span style="font-size: medium; color: #0000ff;"]Like taking portrait shots? Just post them and share with us!

This is, as I consider, one of my best portraits I've ever taken. On campus of University of Toronto (University College Building), Canada, in early 2008. Feel free to comment and give suggestions [:)]

I did these emotionless static whitened portraits for a film festival campaign in 2008:
I basically broke every rule of portrait photography LOL.
(PS I see that the first guy and the first girl are whiter in the lo-res jpg conversion than they are in print. All photos have white faces but here on my computer all facial marks and details are subtle, but intact).

And here is a portrait I did of a Dutch fashion designer:

Thanks Madison. I shot that with a Vivitar 285HV bounced into a reflective silver umbrella placed low and on each side of the subject (so two flashes total). I triggered them with Cactus V2s receivers. At f/7.1 and 1/200 sec, I killed alot of the ambient light to give him a more menacing look. He's actually a big goofball. ;-)

What do you mean, you don't shoot people? I thought that was a picture of my Uncle Bob...

Well, even if it isn't Bob, it's a great shot. I'd be interested to know what focal length and f.

Awesome, Alan.

I normally don't like black backgrounds (prejudice maybe came from macro), but this works perfectly. I love how the baby's face is in full light and the woman (mother, I assume) is in a bit of shadow. I also like the just visible hanging hair. Finally, I like the composition. I always go way tighter, so when I see people pull back and include a plain background and have it work so well, I think "I never would have thought to do that" :)

Alan
03-19-2009, 07:11 PM
John, thanks.

Since I knew the mother was going to wear a black dress, I switched to a black background. I used a soft box on the right, to highlight the baby's face, and a reflector to the left to lighten the mother's face just a bit, but to also keep it in the shadows, as you pointed out. I wanted her hand in the picture and I told her to look at a fixed object, to help give her a contemplative look. The baby cooperated, fortunately, since she was looking all over the place up to this point.

Here's a couple of my favs from my nearly 3000 photo library in Lightroom, who knows how much more I had before I got Lightroom. And I use the amazing 85mm f/1.8 USM for just about all instances whenever I'm shooting people.

Tom: sometimes when subjects are camera shy or don't even make contact with the viewer at all, gives photographs something special like your first shot. It's very good. There's a vulnerability and shiness (is that a word in English) that you can feel. I like that shot a lot actually.

greggf

Colin....why depressing??

Colin
03-23-2009, 01:34 AM
Not truly depressing....

I'm haphazardly going through and organizing my files, and one thing I notice is that I actually am getting better at this. More consistently decent shots, more often 'good' shots. Far less utterly crappy shots.

However, since seeing a lot of the work put up on this forum, it makes it very clear that there's a LOT to learn. Now, this isn't entirely a depressing thing, as it's an opportunity to expand, grow, etc. That really is a good thing. OTOH, it dawns on me, "Damn, I've just begun to really dig into this."

So, I didn't mean it in a bad way, but rather a compliment. Truly terrific images. I'll dig around and see if I can pony up a contribution of my own, though it's kind of hard to follow THAT. (yes, that was yelling) [:)]

I can't wait to learn how to use all that equipment sean recommended...

Until now, I've gone almost strictly with available light. I used to think it was just better, but I think, for me, it's been as much a case of being easier. My prior experience with flash was entirelyof the "flash on the camera flattens the image" variety, and almost always made a picture look entirely unnatural. I think learning how to use available light has been very good experience, but being able to add light to the mix, thoughtfully, just adds a whole new dimension.Seeing the stuff here that uses flash in dramatic or subtle ways is really motivating. Thanks dudes/dudets!

These are two of my favourites.

The first comes from just a simple job - shooting people attending a luncheon. Many were groups, this gent was alone. The occasion was a presentation in August 2005 to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. The local member of Parliament came and presented commemorative medals to the surviving veterans. A simple photo but what a lived in face!

The second photo comes from a First Communion day. This young girl was picked to make one of the readings. She paused briefly before beginning and just looked out into the church.

/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.UserFiles/00.00.00.22.41/img_5F00_4865.jpg

This, believe it or not, was taken with my Canon PowerShot S60. It was taken indoor using only daylight (next to the window) as the light source.

Ohh I forgot to mention that this is the original file straight out of the camera - no post processing was done at all (except cropping for the forums).

The subject is a 1 year old girl = moving all the time and therefore not easy to get a sharp picture while shooting indoor without a flash or any other light source except the natural daylight through the window.

You generally don't want goosebumps, though perky is okay [:P]

Depends on the lighting. If the subject (or something nearby) is wearing something white, that makes it relatively easy with the click tool. Otherwise, you can adjust manually via the color temperature slider, or select a preset white balance based on what you think the lighting conditions most resembled.

I guess, in a way, it's kind of hot, no matter what the color temperature, but discussion along those lines is probably going into the inappropriate, so humor aside....

It looks like you've got a flash in it, and there seems to be a bias towards the bluer side of color temperature, so I'd probably bring it down, just a little. However, keep in mind that the flash isn't the dominant light in the background. I'd take a look at the 'flash' color balance preset in DPP, or whatever software has that preset, and see how it looks for reference. However, I'm not above advocating balancing to taste.

I should qualify, that my laptop monitor hasn't been calibrated in awhile, and my calibrated CRT monitors are packed up in the basement, as we prepare to go all gypsy, so take my observations lightly.

Content wise, I'd say, there's always something pretty cool about a picture of somebody taking a picture [:)], this included.

devsalvi

Thanks Colin for your valuable comments. I did use an ETTL flash(580 exII) with a diffuser as a fill in light. I will try playing with the flash option in DPP to see if it corrects the colors.

This is more of a candid than a portrait, but here goes....

My daughter between games at an out of town soccer tournament. Shot from about 10 feet away, open window at my back, camera left, florescent light above her head. Canon 30D, 70-200 f/4 non-IS, AV mode @ f/4, ISO 200, shutter 1/40, FL 118mm, RAW processed in DPP and resized. I had the camera set up for the last game and just snapped this shot. I didn't think about hand holding at this shutter speed and was pleasantly surprised at the outcome.

Two of my favorites:

40D, 50/1.8, Manual at f/2.8, ISO 400, 1/60th, triggering two 580EX IIs, both with shoot-through umbrellas.

http://photos.templin.org/albums/favorites/IMG_6315.sized.jpg

1D Mark III, 24-105/4IS at 58mm, Av at -2EC, f/4, ISO 800, 1/60th, triggering two 580EX IIs. The "A" flash was camera left and up high on a stand, with a 1/2 CTO gel and a Honl Shorty Snoot. The "B" flash was also camera left, about a foot lower and a foot closer than the A, with a 1/4 CTO gel and a Rosco 103 "Tough Spun" gel as a poor man's diffuser. Biggest mistake was not getting a stand-in to check lighting ahead of time - I wish I'd brought the B flash up somewhat.

I think it's interesting that for the first pic your flashes cost 10x as much as the lens :)

This aged South Indian farmer dresed up quickly with his turban when i asked his permission to photograph him.

He did try to put up a small smile that you can see, but his aged face didnt cooperate much. [What is a good word to describe his facial texture: scorned or weathered?]

The subject is a 1 year old girl = moving all the time and therefore not easy to get a sharp picture while shooting indoor without a flash or any other light source except the natural daylight through the window.

devsalvi: If I might suggest something--the shot would have been better if you had lit your father's eyes. Next time, place the mainlight a little lower so that the light isn't blocked by the subject's brow ridge. People wearing glasses can be tricky to light, but if you play around with the angles you can make it work quite nicely.

The eyes are what draw us into a traditional portrait--and having well-lit eyes (with catchlights) helps a great deal.

devsalvi
08-05-2009, 07:52 PM
Thanks Sean.

For this shot i had the 580exii on the camera with a bounce on it and pointing directly upwards. And you are right, it gets tricky when glasses are involved.

I really appreciate your suggestions. Will give them a shot next time.

Sean Setters
08-05-2009, 08:20 PM
If on-camera's what you've got, you might try a piece of white foam core (or some other flat, white surface) and place it off to the side. Then you can bounce your flash off that. Else, you could place your subject next to a white wall. Cheap and easy does it a lot of the time (just don't tell my girlfriend...she'll wonder where all my money's going).

devsalvi
08-06-2009, 12:19 PM
hehe ... no i wont :)

I was visiting India when i took this pic. so i didnt carry my entire gear. This pic was clicked as a candid picture. it turned out to be a good portrait pose. i dont shoot professionally. so usually its the wall or my other flash which i use as a slave.

Portrait pictures can bring so much satisfaction :) even if its a steep learning curve B-)

Rodger,

Yes, I used the tutorial at DPS, it was easy to follow and the results are cool. I'm working on a few more to post when I get a chance.

Thanks!

Liamisnowon,

I think you have taken some fantastic shots. I'd like to know the technical particulars, but I don't really have anything critical. Excellent work.

kzuk9237,

First shot of the girl: very sharp, good lighting. Very nice catch light in the eyes, but unfortunate that the glasses frame is covering her right eye.

Yes, all of the shots that I posted are natural lighting...including the bw's...the one b&w was honestly a surprise. It was dark...not great lighting, but I was able to catch the person in the forefront as he was talking to someone else real quick as some light through a window hit him...then when I opened up the image, the other person was in the background, I didn't even realize it when I took the shot....then some processing with Lightroom, and turned out to be a photo that carries lots of emotion...

Just did this one over the weekend... my daughters Sweet 16th party.

Used two 600W Visico Strobes w/Soft boxes on their lowest settings (one at 10' and the other at 15'), Canon 70-200 2.8 L @ 200mm from 24' away, f3.2. no PP other than a bump up in exposure. I would have preferred adding a shoot-thru umbrella for back-light but there was just no room.

Not enough room in foyer so you could see the end of the pool table in some lol... oh well, it was all for fun anyhow. I posted most so the kids who were in the pics could download them for themselves.

This is from a shoot I did yesterday. I used a little on camera fill flash (bare 580 EX II) set on ETTLtilted upward to feather the light hittingthe modeland only lighting her face a little. I processed the RAW file in CS4 no cropping neccessary and used the Portraiture 2 plugin from imagenomic to smooth the skin on the weakest setting. Hi Rodger,

I love the lighting and the shots in general for the first 2 pictures. It must have taken a lot of patience to get the dog facing the same way as the senior in the first pic, I just love it. I like the concept of the 3rd shot and the background but I would have liked to see the seniors eyes a little more and not have her feet cut off in the shot. Other then that I really like your work.

Haha the shot with the dog is one of those that just kind of happened actually. The dog got excited and came running into the frame. She reacted with a smile and intinct had me snapping the photo. Everything kind of just came together to create one of my favorite frames from the shoot!

I like the concept of the 3rd shot and the background but I would have liked to see the seniors eyes a little more and not have her feet cut off in the shot.

Good point. Chopping feet off is something I have to work on. Or rather, not chopping feet off. Either way that sounded kind of morbid.. Halloween anyone? lol

Sean, I envy your strobist info!! haha I'm on a school computer and they don't display embedded images [:@] I'll see your pictures when I get home. I'm sure they're amazing though! Question: Do you write down the info on each picture during a shoot? Or at least enough to give you an idea? I'm changing angles, lighting, exposure so much that it'd be a pain to write that down all the time. Just wondering.

Nahh. I typically don't do a whole lot of diffent setups, and I usually keep the lighting fairly constant for that series until we move to a different location. I get the light dialed-in in the beginning and keep shooting with it fixed while making only minor adjustments along the way. As far as remembering the power of the flashes--it's 90% memory, and 10% analysis. Most of the time I remember what the power was, however, if I changedthe powerat some point through the series I'll compare it with the other pics to determine the exact flash output used on that particular shot.

If I rememember to, I'll take a setup shot. Setup shots are important because a flash at 1/4 power shot through a modifier will look completely different depending on the distance from your subject. But, alas, most of the time I forget.

Haha same. As my first year shooting anything for profit, I'm such a jumbled mess of adrenaline/nerves/excitement haha. Setup shots typically fall through the cracks. Oh welll.

Today in photo class our teacher busted out the studio lights, really old and cheap ones to add, for our reallyreally inexperienced class. I'm pretty much the only one that knows what I'm doing, has experience and actually has a DSLR and a pro film camera. Anyways, I was helping people out with setting up the lighting and whatnot, and decided to move in someones shoot. I just stood behind the person doing the shoot and did my best to get a good shot. About 80% didn't come out how I liked, either she wasn't looking right, the lighting was off, or just bad framing/angle. These are the few that actually came out decent.

note that I wasn't directing the shoot, I was simply snapping shots when I could. And others managed the lighting. Everything was taken with my Canon 350D and 85mm f/1.8 @ f/2.8.

Hi all,

This may not be an appropriate place for this post but why not if it can help with PP of portraits.

Just a new (noticed only now) thing I ran into. If you use photoshop cs4 for processing raw images, in Adobe camera raw, there is a control called "Clarity". If you move the slider to the left, it makes the picture creamier and gives the skin a soft look. Thought I will share it here :)

Cheers!

Or, if you slide it to the right, it gives a bit more of a Dave Hill ("http://www.davehillphoto.com/) style. Not totally, but a bit.

Actually Roger, it's a totally customizable filter that comes standard in GIMP. I just found it the other day when I wanted to edit a picture on my girlfriend's laptop (she doesn't have Photoshop). I'm not a huge fan of GIMP--but only because I'm so used to Photoshop. However, it can work wonders in a pinch.

I don't know where devsalvi got the actions he was talking about, but GIMP is a free alternative to Photoshop. You can find out more about it at GIMP's homepage ("http://www.gimp.org/). It's got a few nice standard filters and it also provides a few different options for converting images to black & white.

Roger - See if you can soften the transition in the vignette. When I put a vignette in a 15mp image, I usually max out the limitations of CS2 by using a 250 pixel feather to transition into the vignette. The transition to vignette in your image looks like a line drawn in the sand (otherwise I really like it).

Hi Rodger,

Usually after running the action i do a ctlr+alt+z which opens up the individual steps(separate layers) before the layers are combined. Then you can change / tweak the settings on each layer and then merge them again.

As soon as I saw the picture I thought to myself, "Wow, that's great lighting.." The colors don't bother me, though...but I imagine they might clash a bit more for those who aren't colorblind. ;-)

Thanks Sean! I'm holding that in high regard since I've been a fan of your work for some time now.

This kind of thing always happens, I tell my girlfriend I'm just messing around don't worry about posing, just sit there. I don't get concerned with colors in the shot because I'm just checking lighting. And then when I realize I'm really liking everything else about the shot and that they are keepers except for the color. BW just doesn't do much for the lighting in this shot either.

You know, that's something I've come to realize--delicate strobist lighting doesn't always translate well to black & white. Sometimes the color of the light (as in a gelled background or mainlight) significantly helps draw the viewers eyes to specific elements within the frame. Every now and then, though, I like a picture better in black and white. Take this one, for example, from the same shoot:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2514/4092006604_eb52ef6d94.jpg ("http://www.flickr.com/photos/budrowilson/4092006604/)

The color version simply wasn't working for me because her shirt was actually a light blue. However, when I converted it toB&W and applied a red filter in post, the shirt became darker and the picture worked better. You might want to try the same technique.

Dave Johnston

@ Keith... that IS some good lighting... but I agree that the green background is not the most appealing.

@Sean.. Love the railroad shot. There are very nice lines and an intriguing pose selection, I can see that black and white really would do more for the shot than color.

Took this according to the strobist idea of shooting with white balance set on tungsten with a CTO gelled flash.

C&C welcome, right off the bat, I should have taken a serious pose face on the third image. I'm not sure if the lower perspective of the third image lends itself to a happy-go-lucky type of expression.

Kieth,

I like your messing around portrait. The colors aren't that bad. The lighting is soft and very natural. It sorta looks like you took the shot while she was watching TV. I agree with Sean, mess around with black and white filters, you'd be suprised at what can come out. Picasa 3 has a very good filtered black and white converter. I play with the white balance and color deflection in Silkypix when converting from RAW to B&W.

I mess around with BW filters in PS all the time the thing about this shot I don't care for in BW isn't the wall or sweater, the skin tones are shadowy and you actually lose the fact there is a difference in light ratios and angles. She was actually watching TV, but the lighting is all strobes. 580EXII in a 36" Softlighter II for the key and a 580EXII on camera with a Ray Flash ring for the fill.

I recently purchased a 14" Lumodi beauty dish. I tested it out this weekend and was quite impressed with the results. Since it was quite cramped in this location, I used the 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5. The second flash firing on the background wasn't used in the 1st and 3rd shots.

This was simply a test shot I did this afternoon. I wanted to see if I could kill the ambient enough to see detail in the clouds while still exposing the subject (me) fairly well. I used a circular polarizer (to make the colors pop a bit), and only used 1/2 power on the 580EX. However, I didn't like the composition the way it was shot. In the end, I cut out most of the sky by cropping it in an anamorphic widescreen format. I'm still not 100% happy with my pose, but sometimes I just have to let the little things go... :-)

I am new to the website and find it invaluable. I am a new photographer purchasing my first SLR a couple of months ago. I have a few shots of my kids. I will keep them small and sourced from Flickr. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

All shots were taken with my Canon XSi.

I'm glad it wasn't too cold to shoot this weekend. Used a Canon 580EX in a 14" Lumodi beauty dish. I was pleased with the results.

Sean,

In the last shot, something about the clear seperation of subject and the far-ground gives me vertigo. I feel like she's about to fall into it.

& nice lighting in all of them.

Here are a couple of my own:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2755/4138648697_8be0acc5df.jpg

This is my Canon 20D IR, with my 70-200 2.8 attached. My affection for the subject probably skews how I see it. She's a little lens shy, so I was trying to get her used to having cameras pointed at her all the time. This one came out better than I'd have expected.

On the flip side:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2709/4145441323_608a58d2f2.jpg

I have no affection for this subject. He was a producer at an event I was asked to shoot. I'm not sure why I'm so fond of this one.

The above was with my 5DII and 85 f/1.2.

Man, babies are so, so, so weird looking. It's a testament to the power of evolution that we find them adorable.

(No offense intended. That in particular is a nice lookin' baby. Far less Winston-Churchilly than most. I was just commenting on babies in general)

I did this one tonight in my living room using (2) 430EX and a 580EXII. Was trying for a dramatic and gritty look/feel, like if it were being published on a magazine cover. Minimal photoshop to the image other than adding the logo in the background and b&w. Taken with a 5DMII + 24-105L.

Sorry for the numerous pictures, this shoot was just too much fun.

I wish I had the strobist info ready at hand, but I don't think I recorded it that day. Senior portraits in Pittsburgh, PA. Editing via LR2 and CS4.
