When people look at my photos, most do a double take at this black and white. It may be because 99% of mine are in color, and this one isn't. But anyway, here's mine lets see your best B&W photo.

Colin - I like the lighting in the first picture...the dark smoke is highlighted well from behind...looks very dramatic (almost like a doomsday "we're killing the planet" kind of feel to it).

Colin
04-15-2009, 03:03 PM
Thanks Madison and Sean.

The Dog was hanging out a car door window at the Kihei Cafe in Maui. I didn't get a model release for that, so don't tell the dog owner. I don't know if you can make out the info on the dog tag anyway... I would have paid him in food, but...

The smoke, I think, is actually steam from a sugar cane processing plant. Istopped forthe light through the steam, which to be honest I really coudln't get in it's full wonder, but the part I noticed later, which I find kind of amusing, and fitting with your doomsday scenario, is the pigeon/dove sitting on the line in front of (and looking underneath) the smoke stack, kind of an environmental commentary, even if the real thing was far less menacing. But, I like the doomsday angle. Far more entertaining.

Thus far, the hardest photo to take/edit is Black & White as there are simply so many iterations that can be applied, but if done right, could make an *ugly duckling* truly beautiful.

Wally this is a very good photo. The context determines its appropriateness. If it was placed in a joke email then clearly it would be distasteful, but images like these have their place. This photo documents a very real facet of our human condition and I would hope that it would bring our attention to the plight of the less fortunate. Not many of us in the West realize that this kind of poverty represents a substantial portion of humanity. It

It's a breathtaking shot! The kind of thing I'd want on my wall. There seems to be a bit of colour banding in the sky though -is thatjust an artifact of squeezing it onto a webpage?

greggf
07-30-2011, 04:58 PM
w349...WOW...thank you for the comment!! I exported the photo from LR3.4 into CS5...did my usual post to it in color, then decided to do BW on it, so I copied the image via CS5. But in doing the copy command, I created a different file. The original went back to LR when I was done, but the BW had to be saved as s tiff, then re imported back into LR. Then...sorry...I have a resize action via windows that brings images to a more normal size for viewing, and that , I think, is where the banding came to be!! Whew...so to answer you question...yes!!

I agree! What does the histogram look like Denise? Have you got some room to drag the White in a bit and make the highlights pop?

@ Joel, nice mood and you've captured his expression well. Have you tried a slightly tighter crop? I had a bit of a mess around and quite liked him framed with some of the space above him removed. To me this gives him greater emphasis.

What is a golden blur, is it duplicating the image, applying a Gaussian Blur then setting the blend mode to Overlay?

@William, it is just from a Portrait software program I downloaded, I did a golden blur preset and then a B&W conversion, probably wasn't meant to work like that, but I like the look of it anyway.

I just so happen to be doing lots of b&w photos recently. Almost at 50% b&w. Glad I found this thread... lots of inspiration to keep going with b&w.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6186/6113111414_243410cc02_z.jpg ("http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickslater/6113111414/)

For the first few years of photography, I held the view that there is no point to b&w white as there is always so much color to play with. I only took maybe a handful of b&w photos over 2 years. I took more pictures intended to be converted to black and white over the past month than I would have in 5 years at the pace I was going. I'm starting to even think color can be a little tacky with some shots.

One major thing that I have realized to be a vital tool to capturing high dynamic images, with least distraction; a lens that has excellent flare control. Nobody has ever told me how important flare control can be.

Hey Don,

Your pic looks to be lacking contrast a bit. Darks need to be darker, highlights lighter. That'll give it more pop. Took the liberty of saving the image to try and illustrate what I'm talking about.

/resized-image.ashx/__size/1000x0/__key/CommunityServer-Discussions-Components-Files/15/6064.B_2600_A.png

This of course is completely subjective. Just my humble opinion. May not have been what you were going for at all. I did this on my laptop and I'm sure that when I get to work tomorrow and take a look at it, my version will be too dark. Sigh... Tax returns can't come soon enough. Looks decent from where I'm sitting right now though! Promise! heh.

Don Burkett

Your pic looks to be lacking contrast a bit. Thanks for the sample. Contrast may be part of it, but as I've let this stew for awhile the color is all wrong for an late 1800's photograph. It should be more silvery. Albuem processing which would be correct for the period has this hue, albeit much less saturated. (faded)

I've been practicing on a lot of old photos I took last year to see what I could have done differently.

This shot was nearly B+W when i took it, didn't take much to rip out the last bit of colour to enter it in the competition over at CR.

It's a canal boat in fog, between RIjswijk and Delft (which is part of the main canal from Rotterdam to Amsterdam) near where I used to work in the Netherlands, taken with my lensbaby one morning (i got the early tram and got off a stop early to take photos one day).

The best bit about it is its environmental message, which is out of frame; on the side there's a banner which translates to "here travels a traffic jam of 16 trucks". Kind of takes you back to the 19th century (if it weren't for the car on the back of the barge).

Thanks Steve :-) Although the shot was planned, with the sun so prominent in the frame I had to do some PP-Kung Foo to get the look I liked!

Thanks Steve, honestly, I like them better full size than in web presentation, but overall I was happy with them.

My son Mitch, spent some time together over the break, taught him how to make pizzas from scratch, gave him a pizza maker and all the associated utensils and ingredients. Good times.

Steve, you are going to have to start holding seminars on B&W photography! Another awesome shot! The couple must be very pleased with your work!

Alittle selective color here ...

Nice jobs, Steve, feel free to make this thread all your own if they're all that good.
(i've got some nice ones from xmas day to share here, but i'm still waiting on permissions from the subjects, I know some people don't like images of their 3-year old kids posted on the net...)

One of your best shots ever Denise, I love his disdainful stare and super contrast and exposure.

Hmmm, if our top birder and our top b&w photographer like it ...maybe this one can go in the "Best of 2011" thread! Thanks Joel and Steve for the kind words!

This rather large horsie pulls a carriage up and down the main street of Mt Tambourine. There is a beautiful carriage tethered to him and I think he is a clydesdale.
