Thanks, Steve!
When I saw these guys out in a boat today, I just had to take a shot at this very rare site! Many fisherman look forward to ice fishing in the winter months in Wisconsin! This winter was very unseasonably warm with very little snow. Seeing fisherman in a boat in February around here is a very, very rare! In fact, it is probably the first time ever!

Through my back out about a week ago and the pain is only getting worse and to top it off now I have the flu! I'm averaging about 3 hrs. of sleep a night but it was such a beautiful day outside that I was determined to go out shooting and enjoy it!
These aren't the greatest but I'll take them!

Did you ever want to just cry when you mess up the chance at some really good shots or is it just a female thing? LOL!

here's a few from tonight.

Saw the Screech Owls again tonight...they must be making a nest nearby, because my housemate randomly decided to imitate their call while were out in our backyard (Yes this type of thing is common when you have wildlife biologists living together, and no I don't suggest this technique for attracting animals to photograph, because, strictly speaking its considered harassing the animal, He didn't do it with the intent of actually attracting the owls) and they immediately came into our yard to investigate. I hate not having my telephoto lens with birds like this around.

And finally, one from a few days ago, its a pygmy Rattlesnake. I did a psuedo-HDR to it, because it really looked like it was lacking something. But Im not sure if I like it or not. opinions?

Thanks for looking
Nick
Nick, I like the owl, and the frog. With the rattlesnake though, there isn't any lighting variation, making it really hard to see it's shape. I mean, I can follow the curve of it's markings, but there are no lighting cues as to the shape, and my brain rejects it.
I thought I'd try out Corel Aftershot Pro (as new Corel employee I figured anything I can get with an employee discount is worth checking out :) ) I'll give a review a bit later, as I've only used it for 3 days. I'll save details for later, but should any of you download a trial, don't give up immediately! My initial 5 minute impression wasn't good at all. Since then, I've dug into the preferences and turned off the 'redraw in such a way that you can't subtly edit anything' feature, and learned to use the complicated and not very obvious what it's doing save dialog (when a programmer needs to load up the help page in order to use the save dialog, it's not intuitive!). After a few WTF moments, AfterShot now has a fighting chance of being something I'll consider using. There are things I like, and things I don't. I'll reserve judgment until I've had more time to play with it.
Here's an image with the 'Cross Processing' filter applied:

Nice photo, David! I am interested in reading your review as soon as you post it. So far though, it doesn't sound to user friendly. I just bought NIK Color Efex Pro 4, is this program similar to that as far as providing various filters? Color Efex does have cross processing with about 19 varieties to choose from under the cross processing. It also has a bunch of other filters, some I'm not so sure what anyone would use them for! I like this one that you have applied!
.....this thread exploded yesterday with a bunch of great shots. First, thanks for the comments of mine from last week. Second...nice work everyone!
So many great shots here over the last couple of days. Everyone has been busy this week. :)
A couple of weeks ago I posted some shots of the blowing snow (hard to capture). So last weekend I went back to see if I could get some of the resultant snow drifts. There was some neat formations with a little bit of the beach sand mixed in. Here are a couple:

Had a little photoshoot of the wife today. I love that she humors me.
This shot was actually a compilation of 5 shots stitched together in photoshop. I had the idea to do this shot pretty randomly and thank goodness I had the time to set it up, if it hadn't been this free weekend, might not have done it.

5D mark II + 85mm f1.8 @ 85mm f8 1/200 ISO-400.
The two shots on the left were done with a 580 exII @ 1/2 power shot through a DIY 14" beauty dish gelled with a Cal Red 90 gel Subject left and then 45 degrees subject left. The two on the right were done with the same setup only backwards and using a Storaro Azure gel. The front shot was with a 580ex II and 1/4 CTO gell through the same beauty dish. The subject is holding a 30 inch white reflector under the frame. There is also a Vivitar 285 gridded at 1/16 power for the crown highlight.
This was a fun little shoot. My wife and I both enjoyed the result.
Thanks for looking and feedbacking (new word I think).
Dave.
What a great shot Dave and what a sport your wife is. The colours and the different facial expressions work very well. Specially love the middle one with the subtle wink.
Very articyic snow drifts Pat, well captured.
To interupt the artistic flow, here is another shot of Bo playing Bath Pong, I don't know if Bo and I invented the game, but a table tennis ball in an empty bath tub and then include a kitten is a recipe for a lot of fun.

Dave - Great composite.
Steve - That is funny. Why has nobody turned that into a sport before;)... probably because the bookies could not figure out the odds and point spread.
Hi Dave - heck of a shot for the totally wrong f/#. I don't know if a smaller aperture would have made it any better. Just thinking that's what I would have set it at. Of course, I've never walked outside a dark building and forgotten to adjust my settings - at least not since this afternoon.
@Steve - great shot and idea! Hmmm...I wonder how my Sammy would like that game!
I officially vow to never ever do portrait photography! My speedlights don't like me and I'm beginning to not like them! With every shot my speedlight was just doing whatever it wanted to! I took so many shots and only have a couple keepers.

This evening as I was driving home the sky, which had been gray flannel overcast all day, suddenly started clearing from the west just in time to catch the sun dropping below the horizon. As luck would have it, I was passing my favorite copse of evergreens and was able to include them in yet another spectacular midwest sunset. Lots of dramatic light tonight. I just need to remember my coat and gloves before I go running out into the fields with my camera and tripod. After 20 minutes in the 15mph wind at 40F, I was pretty cold.

Worth the chill factor Mark, that last one is spectacular.
And Bluesman, nice series, I like the light over the keyboard players head.
Agreed. Great shots Mark and blues man.
Hi, just wanted to share some "documentary" photos from the past weekend: Last week a cargo ship was reported listing at almost 45 degrees at a position around 15-20 nautical miles off the coast where I live. After a couple of days they had luckily managed to rescue it safe to harbor and the first shot shows what it looked like then - the ship was listing at about 40 degrees. That was last Friday, and when I returned on Sunday they had unloaded much of the cargo which literally straightened things up. This is seen in the second photo. The third one is a crop of the first one that shows some more detail. This one also reveals an "IS" marking as well as red stripes - maybe that's what saved the ship;-)

@Mark - Absolutely beautiful shots, I agree with Steve that the last one is spectacular!!
@Bluesman - Fantastic series! You were really able to get great sharpness and exposure!
@cls - Nice documentary shots ...any idea how the heck this happened! Glad they were able to rescue all of the cargo, things could have turned out alot worse!
Well, I thought this shot was very appropriate the day before a snowstorm ...it is to remind me that spring is just around the corner (I hope)!

Thanks for looking.
Cheers!
Denise....very nice shot of the tulip...and...good luck today :D
CLS...really interesting "documentary" photos. Any idea what happened?
Angelo...love the fliying cake and daisy.
Thanks for sharing....
Now this is a lot of corn. :p

Mr. GB, great pics. Love the cake balloon.
Great shot, Denise. How'd you get the background black? Did you use a backdrop or were you able to do it with exposure and lighting?
I've been trying to practice more with tabletop photography and my speedlights to hopefully overcome my frustrations with it. Eventually, I will get it right! Also, with tight shots, I never know where to crop so I am trying a few different ways of composition.
So for now, a few more flower photos and more to come! I better move on to other subjects soon though ...the flowery smell throughout my house is starting to get overwhelming!

Denise - I like them (a lot). You did not fall into the pit fall I did the last time I shot flowers... I brought a spray bottle, but ended up over spraying them. I like it better with a few drops. I did not see very much water so I kept spraying, and it wasn't until latter when looking at the shots on my computer that I saw I way over did it with the water.
Something that I have found works well on table top stuff is to use black velvet for the back drop (if you like black backgrounds)... it really keeps me from doing any PP to remove anything in the background. It does not show up any wrinkles, shadows, and the black background is unaffected by flash or other external light sources. Very light absorbing. All I had to do was go to the fabric store to pick up a yard of material real cheap (and it was difficult to admit here that I went to the fabric store:o).
Lovely pictures Denise :)
Thanks! Actually, I was at the hobby store today and was just about to have the clerk cut a piece of black velvet for me when I changed my mind! I just thought that it would be too much of a dog hair magnet! So, instead I picked up these different color foam boards. Maybe next time I go, I will get the black velvet after all!
Very good work with the flower images Denise.
I am not sure if i should put this one in the bird thread, I'll put it here.
I was just lucky to be in the right spot at the right time when a giant eagle swooped in on a snow leopard. I was just shooting by instinct and the action was over and done with in seconds, but I was lucky enogh to get this image.
