Who thinks new Canon teleconverters will be out soon??
I'm curious... I have a 2X extender that I got about a year ago. I don't use it often, but am thinking about purchasing a 1.4x extender, as that would be something I would use quite often. Only thing is, I thought I heard something about Nikon JUST came out with a version III of it's 2X extender, and I'm thinking if that's true, will Canon follow suite soon and release new extenders? It's not a big deal on the 2X since I don't use it much and have had it a year... but it would upset me to get a 1.4x if right afterward they came out with a new version.... what do you all think?

That's true.

Yes, they will follow suit. Canikon copy eachother all the time. But I'd guess 18 months.
I'm also guessing that Canon will release an EF-S 35mm f/1.8 for $200 to copy the new one that Nikon came out with.

It could happen. Or it might be 5 years. There's no way to tell.

Re: Who thinks new Canon teleconverters will be out soon??
EF-S 35 f/1.8? That'd be sweet! I JUST bought an EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro btw.... (every nice lens for the money) and then like two weeks later heard a rumor (that is probably true) that they're releasing an IS version of it soon.... ugh.. so now I'm trying to sell it fast and just go without a Macro lens so that I can get the IS version, or just save up for the 100mm f/2.8 IS USM Macro which I love... I just don't want the same thing to happen with the converter... though it's much less of a problem with a converter I guess....

Best thing I've read all year, assuming it's sharp. All the decent wide-angle primes are very expensive, and an EF-S version would cut down on manufacturing expense. With the 7D, Canon has reason to take EF-S lenses somewhat seriously, so there may be some hope... but at $200, I'm thinking no IS, no USM, and no high-quality build. Something like the 50mm f/1.8, but wider. That's fine with me, as long as it has the image quality.

What more would you want a 1.4x extender to do?
-
Re: Who thinks new Canon teleconverters will be out soon??
Well see that's kinda' my point in that it's not a HUGE deal... but there are things like new coatings on the glass, better build quality, just new technologies inside that could be better.... my feeling is that, like you're saying, there is very little difference. But if I got on and a newer version came out two weeks later, I'd still be upset haha!

The current EF Extenders have a tendency to introduce lateral chromatic aberration in the corners because they don't have any special-dispersion glass or fluorite. A Mark III revision could introduce UD elements and improve the performance in the corners. At present the 1.4x II is quite good in the center, less so in the corners; the 2x II does not impress me at all.

Re: Who thinks new Canon teleconverters will be out soon??
Thanks wickerprints... that's the sort of things I meant buy a new version... details like that.
I have a 2X extender, and when used on a 400 f/2.8 - I find the quality to be outstanding, at ALL apertures I shoot at (usually between f/5.6, the minimum, and about f/8 or f/9). Now putting it on the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM - I do see a little of what you mean... not the clearest glass out there. I'm interested in getting the 1.4x but just not sure if I'll kick myself when a new version comes out haha!! I'll keep debating it. Luckily, it's only $300... it's not like I'm spending $1500 on a lens for a new version to come out right?

This is just a quick idea that just popped in my head: IS? Not sure if it's capable though.

Re: Who thinks new Canon teleconverters will be out soon??
Yeah I was thinking of that before too! I'd bet if that was possible they'd have done it already. I don't know if that would work correctly, but who knows.... maybe! :)

Would be a smart move IMO. I would buy one, maybe two.... one for the wife.

Re: Who thinks new Canon teleconverters will be out soon??
Yeah for sure! I just upgrade my EF 50mm f/1.8 II to a 50mm f/1.4 USM and gave her the old one... I'd buy her an EF-S 35 f/1.8... not terribly big difference and maybe both wouldn't be the best move since it's just a little focal length difference, but the 35 would be more all-around usable than the 50.... I think the 50 on a 1.6x crop is more of a portrait lens in my opinion.

I agree.

Also agree. An EF-S 35mm f/1.8 - if it has USM, count me in. Else, I'll pass (and hold out for aEF 35mm f/1.4 L II USM!).

If they copy Nikon, then it will. The Nikon 35mm f/1.8 has their best autofocus motor with Full Time Manual. It also has rounded aperture blades, an aspheric element, a good manual focus ring, and good optical performance (some ways better than the Canon 50mm f/1.8 and other ways slightly worse). All for a very low price. Personally, I'd buy it even for $300.

So you think we'll soon get a canon version of Nikon's 14-24 f/2.8? I would sort of like one.

CanonRumors does.

*UPDATE*
I addressed Tilt-Shift, Macro and Teleconverters, I didn’t copy/paste that stuff over. Sorry about that.
Be sure to scroll down for part 1
I think there are far more people eager to see what lenses Canon has coming down the pipeline.I know I am.
I think this is going to be the year of the lens from Canon. I truly expect a lot of upgrades and a couple of new lenses.
Without further ado…….
I could see these three announced February 9, 2010.
14-24 f/2.8L
- An ultra wide for full frame that finally makes Canon users happy.
24-70 f/2.8L IS
- Upgraded coating, build and the much desired image stabilization. I personally think Nikon royally dropped the ball not VRing their 24-70.
70-200 f/2.8L IS II
- The current model is very good, but I wouldn’t call it great (don’t flame me too hard for saying that, I do own one) . The lens will get an upgraded IS and better optical performance, especially at 200mm. Lighter weight would be a welcomed bonus.

I do -- although it might come as a slower f/4 and/or a wider 12mm. At f/4 it might complete the 24-105 and 70-200 f/4 series that Canon has going.
Either way, I would love one as well.

I might actually like that better. It doesn't have to be fast to please me, just sharp and wide.

Re: Who thinks new Canon teleconverters will be out soon??
What do you think the current SHARPEST "ultra-wide angle" is for APS-C.... not necessarily the fastest or widest but the sharpest?
-
Re: Who thinks new Canon teleconverters will be out soon??
Jordan, from what I've heard, the Canon EF-S 10-22 beats all of the competition, but the Tokina 11-16 and 12-24 are sharp, also. I don't know much about the new Sigma and Tamron lenses.

Re: Who thinks new Canon teleconverters will be out soon??
Yeah, I posted a discussion about this topic a few days ago... I don't want to get the Canon for two reasons... one it's more expensive ($750) and two, I've used it and don't find it to be as sharp as I'd like. I haven't used ANY of the others though.. but I'm leaning toward the 11-16 2.8 :)

I don't know how sharp you need it to be... I can show you one example of one of my pictures with a friends tamron 10-24. I will post the raw file in a .rar so you can download it and see for yourself.
Keep in mind that there is also motionblur, and I used a polariser.
Here it is:
