Lowepro lens cases for lenses with hoods

    Hi All,

I've decided to add a bit of additional protection for my lenses by enclosing them in Lowepro lens cases. The problem is that the Lowepro compatibility chart does not account for lens hoods. So, can the group offer advice on the best cases for the following lenses, with hoods attached (reversed is fine)? I've indicated my best guesses based on the stated sizes of the cases and the actual physical measurements of my lenses and hoods, with the exception of the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM +EW-83E, which I can't measure since I'm going to purchase it before the rebates end, along with the cases for all my lenses.

    • EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM - Lowepro Lens Case 1W (tight fit, maybe I need the 4S?)

    • EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM -Lowepro Lens Case 4S

    • EF 85mm f/1.8 USM -Lowepro Lens Case 1W (seems like the only choice, but lots of extra room)

    • EF 100mm f/2.8<span>LMacro IS USM -Lowepro Lens Case 2S (seems like a perfect fit)

For the 17-55mm, I'm not sure I need a case - this is the lens I generally leave on the camera. Thoughts?

I'd appreciate any insights that are offered. I'm willing to consider cases other than Lowepro if the fit is optimal.

    Thanks in advance!

Check out Bryan's review page here.

Click on any of the Lowepro lens cases and he'll tell you exactly which lenses fit in (with or without the hood).

Thanks! I did check out Bryan's reviews first. However, some lenses are not mentioned in the reviews (although I may have missed them) - I didn't see thethe EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM with hood, theEF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM with hood, or the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM with hood listed with any of the cases, only the EF 85mm f/1.8 USM with hood reversed with the Lens Case 1W (which seems too big, but there may not be another option). Also, the Lens Case 2S is not reviewed, and that seems tailor-made for theEF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM with hood reversed.

Ok, so I bought some cases (along with theEF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens)and tried them myself. For anyone else this may help, here are the results:

    • EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM with hood reversed - Lowepro Lens Case 1W works well with the hood detached and slid in alongside the lens;Lowepro Lens Case 4S has too much room at top, even with the hood not reversed.

    • EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USMwith hood reversed-Lowepro Lens Case 1W is a perfect fit!

    • EF 85mm f/1.8 USMwith hood reversed-Lowepro Lens Case 1 (not 1W, 1S, 1M, or 1N, just plain 1) is a good fit. The lens with hood reversed is very loose in the 1W, so loose it can turn sideways (Bryan, if you see this it might be worth removing it from the 1W review, or mentioning that the 1 is a better fit).

    • EF 100mm f/2.8<span>LMacro IS USMwith hood reversed-Lowepro Lens Case 2S is a perfect fit!

Little late coming into this, sorry. Think Tank makes modular pouches that allow for storing lenses with both the hood reversed and in position. They have the skin set (what I use) and the padded modular sets. www.thinktankphoto.com. If you ever order from there, let me know I have a non expiring code as an affilate that gets you a free small pouch or card holder.

Thanks for the tip! Looking at their offerings, most seem to 'tall' for the lenses I want to put in them, much like the issue with the Lowepro 4S, which is the right width for the 10-22mm with hood, but is ~1.5" too tall (and it's still 1-2" shorter than the ThinkTank bags).

But, I may end up with a holster bag from them - they look quite nice!

The holsters are very nice. I have a 70 on order for my 70-200 and 1D2.

Not to hijack this thread but, how is the protection of the skin set? I've been reading a lot of reviews lately about this but how does it protect the stuff inside? I haven't seen one locally so I'm not so sure if the skin set is better than the modular set.

The skin set has no padding, except the removable thin dividers. They have built in raincovers and are pretty water resistant without using the covers.

They have no padding, unlike the Modular pouches. I find that they protect the lens from scrapes and abrasion very well. They are very good at keeping dust, sand, overspray and whatnot out of the lens when the flap is down.

I prefer the Skins to the Modulars because of their low profile, they take of no space what so ever when you take a lens out and their lighter.
