@HDNitehawk.
That's awesome! Which version?
I have been tempted by a 500mm f/4 IS first gen locally. I think it could definitely be a nice for more mid range birding and still handle an 1.4 pretty well.
And an 600mm as a heavy hitter.
And of course the 800mm f/5.6 would be my Mike Tyson of birding lenses. Lol.
I'll be getting two 1Dx III's and 200mm f/2.0 here in the next couple few weeks as well. Yeah I know I talk smack about them for being low in resolution, and I still cringe (To say the least!) at the thought of spending 14k for two 20mp bodies! But they are amazing in every other way and just getting a second (Or is it the 5th body?! LOL.) high resolution body seems to be the best solution for me.
When the R1 comes out I may snap one up. But who knows when that will be or what it will even be like hence the 1Dx III's. Maybe it will be only 30mp and at that point I think a 1Dx III for the money will seem like a good compromise for me and just shoot it till it breaks. Which might be 15 years or longer considering how well Canon builds these things.
For me the 1Dx III offers everything I need in a body. I'd upgrade to the R1 if it has 50mp or more. For larger prints and for cropping. BIF comes to mind or just birding in general.
