This new lens got me looking at what else has been popping up. It seems Sigma had a 28-70mm f/2.8 for a while, and just announced a 28-105mm f/2.8 to replace it. Tamron has a well regarded 35-150mm f/2-2.8... but they're all unavailable on Canon. They're mirrorless lens designs, and Canon's not willing to share their mount, so we all miss out.

I can understand you not being interested in this new lens, Neuro, with a 24-105 (f/4 and f/2.8), and the 28-70 f/2 on hand. There's nothing new that this lens offers you, other than a weight savings. While I'd like the extra range the 24-105 f/2.8 gives on the long end, I'm not sure about spending 2.7x to get it, and I'm not sure my wife would appreciate the 3x weight gain. The 28-70mm f/2 is a similar cost/weight trade to get one extra stop.

As someone who doesn't already have the expensive L tier standard lenses (just the EF 24-70mm f/4L) and a wife that wants light and small, this lens seems to hit a lot of good points. Faster than what I have, lighter than what I have, better IS than what I have, and likely better IQ than what I have, all without breaking the bank or my wife's wrists.

I'll likely wait for more balanced reviews rather than select reviewers allowed an early look. It seems pricey for non-L, but not unreasonably so if the IQ is near-L. We're locked out of the competition's lenses, so all the available Canon options are far pricier, and heavier. Unless there's a glaring flaw, I think I am interested. It arrives just in time for the wife's birthday too.

BUT... I'm willing to be dissuaded. As you do have the 28-70 f/2... are you finding the zoom range overly restrictive? I suspect you really only pull that out when you're looking for the ultimate in subject separation, and otherwise rely on the wider range of the 24-105, but when you do use it, how do you find it?
