I've got an M4 Mini on the way (supposedly coming Friday). I'm considering getting a TerraMaster D8 Hybrid to sit along side it. It can take 4 up to 22TB drives (HDD or SSD), and 4 up to 8TB M.2 NVMes. This would let me attach all my old drives as is and/or potentially move data from my old 2TB HDDs over to faster SSD drives or NVMe storage as I see fit. It's only USB 3.2 (10Gbit), but it's also fairly dirt cheap for that many storage bays.

If you want a small portable drive for your laptop though, then like Neuro said, the Samsung T7s work well. I've got a 2TB T7 Shield kicking around to not use all my internal laptop storage. You can likely snag a deal on Black Friday, or maybe one of the many pre-BF sales.

The M4 Mini looks like a sweet little machine. I've got a nice desk setup already (5K:2K display, Magic Keyboard and Trackpad, ethernet, etc., connected to a Stone Pro dock), but since there are 5 people in the house and we each have our own Mac laptop, there's no real need for a 'home computer'.

It looks like my M4 Pro will also be here Friday, supposedly. Apple said 11/19 when I ordered, their shipping notice came this morning stating by 11/15 but UPS says tomorrow.

I have a little 2-bay Synology NAS with a pair of 10 TB drives that I use for Time Machine backups of the above-mentioned 5 Macs and general storage.

They go on sale pretty frequently. I have a pair of 4 TB T7s that I also use for Time Machine backups, and a pair of 2 TB T7s that I use to archive 4K video and RAWs >5 years old. I keep one of each pair at work, I am fortunate to only go in one day per week, and I swap out the drives when I do so I always have an offsite backup (3-2-1 backup principle, though in my case since one of them is a RAID1 NAS and I swap two SDD for backup, I'm actually doing 5-4-1).

One great thing about having a TM backup on an SSD, though it's only of occasional utility, is that setting up a new Mac from a TM backup of the current one is about the easiest way to go, and from an SSD it's a pretty fast process.
