    Anyone Use Snoots?

I have grids in various sizes but I was thinking of ordering a snoot and would like some feedback from anyone that has used them.

    - Does size matter? Which is better ...a 5" or 8" snoot and what difference in affect do you get?

    - Does the 8" work well as a bounce?

    - Regular or gold/silver? I have seen a few photos taken with the regular but none taken with the gold/silverwhich is suppose to provide a pleasing warm skin tone. Better than a gel?

    - Are using grids better than using a snoot?

Any input or photos greatly appreciated!

I've used a snoot on a couple of occasions, but I use grids much more. The reason? A snoot will typically give you a hard hard edge between shadow and light. I prefer the gradient at the edge and focused center of a grid. In my opinion, a good grid is usually more ideal than a snoot under most circumstances. Oh, and I use gels with the grids quite often.

If you have your heart set on a snoot [corrected], I'd suggest a DIY option. Buy a couple of sheets of craft foam and glue them together. Buy a couple of pieces of long velcro. funnel the foam around your flash and make the end opening as large or small as you want by varying the placement and grip of the velcro. If you need a warm tone, just throw a gel in there.

    Hey Denise,

yes I saw that the link doesn't work. Don't have permission or something, I don't get it.

The guys of lightenupandshoot.com have a really great way of tellling you all about beginning with easy set-ups for strobism. While strobism isn't really my thing, I always enjoyed watching their videos. If you're a bit interested in strobism, I think it's a great site and great guys to tell you the basics that you need to know.

Since I have never used a grid, I have been looking at this also. I really like the way the light smoothes at the edge when a grid is used. Did you buy one or try the DIY version? Any suggestions in trying the DIY version?
