    First macro shots

    Hello all,

I just got the 100L Macro in time for spring (actually here in Wisconsin, "spring" is a figment of our imagination; it hailed an inch today - seriously).

Here's the best of my first macro exposures, which I took of our lone crocus patch after my kids decided it needed water.

    ISO 800, f/11, 1/125s on a 7D, handheld.

C&C welcome. I know the shadows aren't ideal. I guess a ring flash is in my future...

Also, any recommendations for good macro photography reading? I read Bryan Peterson's Understanding Close Up Photography, which I found enjoyable and informative.

    Thanks!

Great photo Bryan! New Hampshire spring sounds very similar to Wisconsin. We know it is spring because the foot of snow we had on Friday is mostly gone by Monday.

BTW--I like the shadows that you have in the photo.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Denise, I will look into those books.

Round two happened last night after a quick trip to Trader Joe's for an orchid. This is way too much fun and will definitely interfere with all the other things I am supposed to be doing. []

ISO 100, f/16, 15s on tripod (I need some lights!):

ISO 100, f/16, 6s on tripod, from behind the flower.

Do you have a 'regular' Speedlite or other external flash? If so, you can add an OC-E3 (or cheaper 3rd party equivalent) and just handhold the flash. Even without the off-camera cord, you can add light with your flash. This shot was one of my early attempts with my then-new 100L Macro - during the exposure, I moved my 430EX II to a couple of points around the flower and fired it manually (with the pilot/test button on the flash):

Don't have a Speedlite? That's ok - try a flashlight! The shot below was one of my first with my MP-E 65mm, before I picked up the MT-24EX Twin Lite. This day lily stigma was lit with a handheld LED Maglite:

    EOS 5D Mark II, MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro @ 4x, 0.8 s, f/10, ISO 200

Have fun with your new lens!!
