Help! How can this image be enhanced?

    Hi!

My brother-in-law just lost his young son and wants to enhance a favorite picture of him taken by his cell phone. It is very pixelated/low resolution. I am wondering how it can be enhanced. How much info can be retrieved from those pixels? Is there software that can be used that will make educated guesses about the info in the pixels and hence be able to enhance the image? Are there companies who can enhance the image for a price?

    Thanks!

    Hilde

It's not going to be easy with such a small image out of a cell phone, If you have Photoshop you can try some sort of re-sampling plug-in such as Perfect Re-size (Genuine Fractals).

I'm not sure if you'll be able to make a generic enlargement or enhancement with a click of a button. It wont bring back pixels, but photoshop may allow you to make slight enhancements through custom adjustments

I would opt to attempt to find an artist to paint it, that may be the best way to preserve the moment in the best of quality.

You fixed the color pretty good, Takahiro! It looks a lot better!

Thanks for the nice words, Denise!

It is a good idea to make art out of it, Jordan. I was thinking perhaps doing something in Photoshop and see how that turned out and perhaps print it on some canvas.

If you have Photoshop CS5 you can use Pixel Bender and its Oil Painting filter.

Here is one I did of with a picture I took of my step-grand-daughter.

You can see a lot more work done with Pixel Bender to see what you can do with it here >> http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1007816

Pixel Bender is a free plug-in that can be found at here >> http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/pixelbenderplugin/

HUH?! Sorry ...I was in a hurry at work at this made no sense! I meant to say that I don't blame you or your brother-in-law to want to keep it and improve it.

Anyway, looks like you have a few good suggestions here and I hope it all works out!
