IPS monitors

I was looking for a new monitor but couldn't afford (or justify) any of the high end IPS monitors, but Dell had a 21.5 inch IPS for $239. I was skeptical, but the reviews were pretty good so I went ahead and got it. So glad I did. This is a Dell Model U2211H 21.5 widescreen. There is a great deal of difference in the resolution/clarity/color on this monitor as compared to my 5 year old Dell ultrasharp 19".


Upon reciept of the new monitor, I calibrated it with a spyder 3 pro. Some things I have noticed---:


The good: The monitor is much sharper


The bad: I can now see faults in my images that I didn't see before


The good: Color is richer and clearer on this monitor


The bad: Also shows color problems (lack of contrast, etc) in my images That i didn't notice before


The good: Looks good and very viewable even in strong ambient light-also has non-glare screen that really is.


has 4 USB 2.0 ports---very handy


Very easy to calibrate----no color sliders


I haven't watched any movies or played any games, but the Youtube/news videos seem to play fine.


Lots of adjustment options ---but don't mess with them if you calibrate.


The two biggest complaints I noticed in the reviews were the location of the power button---too easy hit when making other adjustments---I personaly like the location of the button; and some complained of overpowering backlight on contrasty images---I have been watching for this but haven't noticed any.


Now, I have never used a highend Viewsonic or Eizo, so I can't compare---


Overall---Very nice monitor for photogs.Considering the price ofr this IPS monitor I give it [Y][Y][Y]


Note: I would have preferred a larger monitor, but 21.5 is the largest that will fit on my roll top desk

Me thinks I just found a new monitor I've been staring at all kinds ofnewer onesand even going back into the archives here and seeing which way to go. The Samsung I currently use is off 16% in the mid-upper and and over 20% in the upper corners. Everytime I make an adjustment, I have to drag it to the sweet spot to see what it really looks like. What you have described above sounds great for the price range I was wanting to stay in. Thanks for posting.

I have to agree with Bob, these IPS monitors, in particular from Dell; are nothing short of *awesome*.


I *snapped* up a Dell Ultrasharp U2410 IPS panel - saved myself $200.00 via Dell Days. Looking around at other IPS monitors - they are not cheap with some fetching a hefty price tag at 5x the price I paid for mine. The best part of this panel is the fact that my print-out
