7D Wireless Flash W/ or W/O help

Hey guys,

Did a quick search and couldn't really find anything to answer my querry so here we go. I use the 7D wireless flash firing extensively, it's been truly awesome. However, I've been having an issue with it "overheating" as many have already discussed. My other issue is sometimes the line of sight just doesn't work when I'm in a vertical orientation and I have my 430ex on the opposite side of the pop-up flash. My question, is if buying a 580exII and putting it on the hot-shoe, angling it upwards, and then using it as a master flash will fire the off camera flash with more consistency? I was thinking of getting a 580exII anyways because I do wildlife photography and for times when I use a flash, the extra power from the 580exII would be a big help.

Now, having said all this, should I just shut up and buy a set of radio triggers? I love the ETTL, and being able to control my entire set up through the camera is huge. So would my money be better spent on a set of PWs?

If you're shooting in a location that will allow you to bounce the flash, then the 580EX would suit your needs, I believe. However, outdoors is another story; there, radio triggers are your best bet. I'd suggest looking into some cheap ones like the RF-602 radio triggers on Ebay to see if you can tolerate using the flashes in manual mode.


If you have the time and patience to learn, you can do quite a bit with manually controlled flashes (and a few modifiers). Here are a couple of shots from my last two sessions (the bottom being a self-portrait). I use Cybersyncs to fire my flashes, but I imagine the RF-602s would suit you just fine...
