I agree, Nice shots JJphoto. I also favor the Pelicans but the hawk's stare is cool. This is a Hairy Woodpecker from my yard this morning, also shot at 700mm!

Conropl, I have the 400mm 5.6 lens, 500mm 4.0 and 1,4TC, 700mm 5.6 is a lazy typing for 500mm+1.4XTC, sorry for the confusing!

They do have nearly identical markings ... the Hairy is quite a bit bigger but unless they are side by side you can't tell that way.

Notice the length of the bill....on a Downy it will be less than half the front to back size of the head (ie it's very short) and the Hairy has a bill longer than half the head. Here is a Downy.....

clemmb, good question. I tried lots of different ways. Here is what I like best (i.e., the method that I have found results in the least amount of image degradation):

1. Open the images in the size you want them in flickr (I do 640x388)
2. Right click on the image at the appropriate size and click "Open Image in New Window"
3. Copy the URL for the image in the new window
4. Click "Image" icon to insert an image in the reply or post box in the digital-picture forum
5. Click "From URL"
6. Paste URL in the URL box
7. Deselect "Retrieve remote file and reference locally"
8. Click "OK"

I'm sure there is a better way to do this, but this is the only way I could get sharp images to insert. I still can't figure out how to link my flickr account, but I've seen other people do this. Anyone else have any ideas?

@ Lancer, nice shots! like the reflection of the duck shot! did you crop this shot? it's a little too tight to me IMO, and also the bird in first picture seems a little too centered, just my 2 cents!

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. This is a Male Northern Cardinal, taken just a few minutes before the Hairy Woodpecker. Both of these were shot using the 500mm f/4L + 1.4 TCII (total of 700mm) and both were at ISO 2000. You can get away with higher ISO settings as long as the image is not underexposed. Photoshop and DPP can remove the noise easily but not if most of the histogram is pushed to the left.....you will not be able to recover detail.
