Thanks, Jayson. The key is to have a big DOF so there's no worries about focus. That shot was taken with a Rokinon 8mm FE set at f8, so virtually everything was in focus.

but your comment does remind me-
I have seen a photographer from a VW magazine at a couple shows walking around with a ladder

and although I've not seen it.. perhaps attaching to tripod setting timer and lifting tripod into air and hope for best

Anyone done either of those? better ideas for gaining height for a shot?

I've done this. Easier if you have a light tripod and lots of light.
