A few more from my trip to Idaho. My sister took me to see eagles on Lake Coeur D'Alene. She was bummed because we only saw 7-8 eagles. In early January, there are many more. In a tree where we saw 3 at once, she has seen up to 8.

I'll be going back next year . Anyway, I was limited to 200 mm as I took the 70-200 f/2.8 II rather than my 100-400L on the trip and don't yet have the extender.

Great shots, Brant. I went looking for eagles today and the only one I saw was so far away that my center AF point covered him completely. I spent some quality time with a GBH, though. Not quite as interesting.

Mark....I know that feeling all too well. While my sister was "bummed" about only seeing 7-8...I was estatic. Far too often around here I see nothing to 1 or 2 way off.

This actually had me thinking....for the investment in gear...I may need to focus on the investment in putting myself in the right place at right time. In this case, Northern Idaho the first week of January for eagles.

The Mississippi River is a great place for eagles. The Army Corps of Engineers maintains a web site with counts. The birds will go south as the Mississippi River farther north freezes in their search for open water and food sources.

^^^Wow. I stand around for hours at our lake waiting for the eagle pair to show up and you have a whole city of eagles to choose from. Where along the Mississippi was this shot?

Dave -That is crazy. I jump out of my skin with excitement when I see one. I cannot imagine that many together.

Lock & Dam #13 in Fulton, IL. They were quite a distance away, that shot was at 280mm on a crop sensor. The birds weren't moving either to get closer they just stayed in tree. We did have great luck that day in Clinton, IA across the river.

I haven't gone out a few times and Dubuque, IA and Clinton, IA appear to be the best results for me within 2 hrs or so driving.
