I'll have the 2xIII from B&H tomorrow morning (I have the 2xII currently), and hopefully the firmware update by then, too. By sheer coincidence, I'll be at an Audubon preserve tomorrow afternoon. I'll try to get some pics up soon...

That will be great. I am looking forward to hear your thoughts.

Looking at the ISO's for the 2x III on the 600mm they appear less than acceptable. Seeing what it does in real life really helps.

This firmware update really brings back the 500mm 2X at 1000mm vs the 600mm 2x at 1200mm discussion. I knew there was some reason I was procrastinating and not ordering the new lens yet.

Great opportunity - looking forward to seeing the pics.

Here's a shot I just put on the 'bird photos' section using the 600 + 1.4 III, cropped to 1963 X 2394, processed in DPP only

Agreed. Try comparing the 600 II + 2xIII ISO crops to the 800/5.6 + 1.4x (either) - they look quite similar to me. Assuming the Kenko 1.4x is no better than the Canon, go check out Art Morris' pics with the 800+Kenko 1.4x. I'm encouraged...but I'll see for myself and let you know.

Maybe it'll autofocus at f/22 across all focus points instead. That'll make John happy anyway.

Back...and it's a *magical* firmware upgrade, with the ability to alter lens hardware!

    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consum...OS1DX_firmware

The first lens listed as newly compatible with the 1.4x is the 70-300L. AFAIK, the two aren't physically compatible.
