    Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 AT-X 116 PRO DX

So last night I celebrated my 27th birthday and unwrapped this surprise gift from the best gf in the world!!

This lens is great!!!! SHARP pics. This lens is for APS-C sensors like my 40d. For the price of $599 compared to the Canon 16-35L $1499, you surely can't beat that!!

*cough* Yeah, I am a bit surprised. Although, it was very sharp for me when using the center focus point. However, whenever I used an outside focus point, the results were horrendous (it would frontfocus by several inches). And it was the same with 2 different copies I had. Of course, I was using a 50D...and the 11-16 was developed during the era of the 40D. So it might be a simple incompatibility with the newer 50D (although I think the 50D's autofocus mechanism and algorithm are identical to the 40D).

I tested it at f/2.8 and f/3.5, mostly.ISO 100. Fixed shutter speed. Test subject relatively close (butfarther than the minimum focusing distance). Upon receiving my refurbished Canon10-22mm f/3.5-4.5, I did the same tests and got superb results (thekind of results I was hoping to see with the Tokina). I'm very happy with the Canon lens.

    Congrats!

I have the same wide angel set up and cannot be happier - sharp pictures and the f/2.8 helps too!

Can you post some pics at %100? Particulary in the extreme corners.

They aren't comparable lenses. Try the Canon EF-S 10-22, admittedly f/3.5-4.5 and $190 more expensive, but it's IMHO worth the difference.
We're a Canon/Profoto family: five cameras, sixteen lenses, fifteen Profoto lights, too many modifiers.

I have an aversion to variable-aperture lenses, but I'd have to agree(of course, I wouldn't know that for sure if I hadn't had my hands on both at one time or another). ;-)
