HELP!!! stuck lens filter =/

just wanted to ask you all for any tips on removing a stuck lens filter.

the lens (with filter) was in my camera bag without the lens cap on, and i accidentally bashed it. the rim of the filter is bent/dented at one point - thanks God that the lens seems to be undamaged!

but now i can't removed this lens filter... do i need to buy one of those special tools to remove it??

    thanks

If its that stuck, then most likely you should. Always useful to have one in case of "emergency".

split the tube of a bicycle tire in have and trim a strip the diameter of your lens + a couple of more inches for holding. This will give you some good grip.

...or buy one of these tools. I bought them and they work quite well. They're cheap, inexpensive, yet do the job well. Because of shipping, I'd suggest buying some other things from B&H at the same time so that you don't end up paying for shipping charges only for the wrenches. Just make sure to buy the write size wrench for the job.

Here's Byran's review of the item Sean suggested.

The good thing about the filer wrench is that it applies even pressure around the filter when trying to remove it. This helps prevent damage to the filter.

Many times db, it also works for oil filters, pickle jars and other tight fitting objects.

That's a shame. Do make sure you try the bike tube / rubber grip before you order a tool. Any nice, maliable, grippy rubber will work. Bike tubes are nice and free-- go to any bike shop and asked for a popped one. They universally have dozens and dozens on hand, which they just toss out. I use them as lashings, so I often grab trashbags at a time.

I use one of those small square rubber grips designed to get the lids off jars.

Be careful that the damage hasn't extended into the threads on the front of the lens. You may need Canon's help if the lens itself has damage to the threads that is locking the filter in place.
