    factory markings on lens elements?

    Guys,

I just purchased a 70-200 f2.8IS and I want to be sure it's ok before the RMA time is up. I noticed under certain angles that there is a miniscule "O" marking on the front lens element, and well as another "O" or possibly a solid "O" (it's so small I can't really make it out) in the glass behind the front element. Is this standard from the factory? the one on the front element looks too perfect to be a defect, but I am not sure about the one in the second piece of glass. Hope somebody can shed some light!

    thanks

Just checked my 70-200mm f/2.8 IS - and I don't see any rings. It is hard to know how to advise you on this one. If they are very faint, my guess is that you will not notice any image quality degradation. Take some shots and evaluate the results.

If you are concerned, you could exchange it or have Canon take a look. Peace of mind is worth something.

    thanks bryan,

I also called canon, and they informed me that they the glass should not have any marking on it except for the coating.
