I'm planning to buy one asap.
Isa lens-hood given along with the lens or do I hv to buy one apart?
Reading the lens specs I cannot understand if the lens-hood is given by default or what.
Thx.

Taken from the-digital-picture.com review of the 500mm f/4 L IS:
"Canon has made an effort to keep the Canon EF 500mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens as light as possible without sacrificing strength by utilizing a Magnesium alloy lens barrel. The included carbon fiber lens hood is very light (and very expensive to replace). You will want to use it for protection and improved contrast."
So, yes, if buying retail, the hood comes with the lens.
If I'm not mistaken Canon provides a lens-hood with every L-lens they make.

If you get it from a reputable dealer, like B&H or Adorama, you'd get the lens, its hood, trunk, strap, leather lens cap, rear cap and manual.
Have fun!
Mmmmm.... 500mm f/4.... Sorry. Just had to drool a bit on this posting...
Thx everybody, for coming back so soon, I did appreciate this.
I knew "L" lenses usually come with lens-hood (I've got 7 of them and all do hv lens-hood with).
Hv a nice day.
I've heard about that you have to buy the suitcase as extra.
The suitcase should be given free of charge along with the lens, so far.

Seriously, all L lenses sold by reputable/authorized dealers include the rear cap, the front cap (usually plastic, a leather sleeve for superteles), the hood (sometimes built-in like on the 300mm f/4L IS and 400mm f/5.6L), and the case (a thin, drawstring pouch for small lenses, a zippered case for mid-size lenses, and a hard-sided trunk for the superteles).
The EF 1200mm f/5.6L comes with a case like all the other Canon L lenses, but sadly, it does not come with the hand-truck or small jib crane needed to move the lens from place to place.
