Step-Up Rings

    Hi All -

Is there a difference between a $5 step up Adorama ring and a $25 Tiffen step up ring? I am looking for a 58mm to 67mm and a 58mm to 72mm ring and all I can findare those two choices online for the 58mm to 77mm and I haven't found anything yet for a 58mm to 67mm, maybe they don't even make those. I only own one and its a B&W 72mm to 77mm which I like. If I sell my Canon 85mm f/1.4, I'll have two filters that I need to step up.

    Denise

UPDATE: After more searching, I found two Kenko ones in the sizes I'm looking for. I assume those are ok.

    Hi Denise,

FYI, B+W does make a 58→67mm adapter - here's theB&H link for it. There's also a B+W58→72mm adapter- here's theB&H link for it. I think Adorama stocks them, too (grab the MFR# from B&H and search that on Adorama).

B+W does not make a58→77mm adapter, so I have the Adorama58→77mm adapter, and when I used it, it worked just fine. However, I traded my 85mm f/1.8 for the 85mm f/1.2<span style="color: #ff0000;"]L II and although I found a use for the 58mm B+W MRC UV that I kept when I sold the 85/1.8 (its now on the MP-E 65mm), I really have no use for the58→77mmstep-up ring now nor in the foreseeable future. So, assuming you haven't ordered the Kenko version, if you want my58→77mm adapterjust let me know and I'll drop it in the mail to you.

    Hi John -

Thank you for the links! For some reason, I didn't come across those when I was on B&H earlier. Maybe it is because I got side tracked while I was there. Funny how that happens! Looking at step up rings led to filters which in turn led to the Lee Big Stopper (love that filter)! Too bad it is out of stock!

So needless to say, I didn't order anything yet and I would love to take the step-up ring off your hands if you are seriously not going to be using it!

I would look at it that I 'm borrowing it for awhile until you need it again...after all there are still many lenses down the road in your future, so you never know!

    Thank you so much, John!

Do you still have my address?

Step up rings are not exactly high tech, however, mount like metal to like metal when you can.

If you have brass filters like B&W or Heliopan, brass stepup rings like B&W rings are the way to go. For normal stepup ring use for temporary setups, I have a cheap set of stepup and a set of stepdown rings from photodiox which work fine. About $14 for a whole set of 7, so I can get many combinations. I used them with several lenses and a Canon EF adapter to test reverse mounting lenses for macro use. I also have filter wrenches from Micro Tools in case they get stuck. They are inexpensive and work somewhat better than other methods using rubber bands, etc.

Thank you so much, John!! I will keep an eye out for it.

scalesusa - Thanks for the link. I will keep it in my amazon wishlist for future use. For now, it has a number of sizes that I would not use but who knows what lenses are in my future!

Denise, get the B+W ring. It is a little bit more than the others but definitely worth it. My current lens lineup has a 67mm thread, but I anticipate moving up to a 77mm one some time in the near future. I recently purchased a B+W CPL and purchased the 67mm to 77mm step up ring with it. Don

I agree, Jayson - except for the fact that one of the sizes Denise was looking for (and I needed previously) is 58mm to 77mm, and B+W doesn't make one of those... []
