Hi, if you don't mind fully manual flash I would recommend Youngnou - I have a really cheap YN560 that is a lot of flash for the money.
For everyday flash photography a fully manual flash isn't very convenient. A friend of mine has a Nissin that is comparable to the 430EXII regarding functionality as well as flash power and he likes it a lot. It's not a lot cheaper than the original though.
You could also consider the Metz series. I have one, and is very happy with it. Very intuitive to use, and has E-TTL.
