I own a Canon T3i. I'm very happy with it. Recently i rented the 400mm 5.6 and loved it! I am seriously considering purchasing this lens brand new.
However, a friend is selling a 5D MKII in really good shape. He wants $1300. Roughly the same price as the new 400mm. I can't afford both….suggestions? thoughts?
That is to much for a 5D II.
For $1,300, I would watch for a sale on the 6D if you want to go FF. It should be a significant upgrade over the T3i. But, just factor in the total cost. In other words, do you have the lenses you'd want if you suddenly went FF?
Agree with both above... too much for a 5dII, and you would be better off with a 6d.
One other point though - Going full frame would make everything seem even further away. You lose the crop factor and would need to crop more in post or get closer. If you go full frame that 400mm may seem a little short.

I agree too. Wasn't there a news item in the last day or two, with the 6D being $1000? From what I've read, the bad thing about the 6D is that only the center focus point is good... but from what I've read, the 5DmkII didn't have spectacular AF either. The 6D is new, with warranty, shoots in lower light... vs. the 5DmkII, used, no warranty, and limited high-ISO range. The 6D probably has a pop-up flash than can act as a master too.
Now, as for the 6D vs. 400mm question, that's a question that only you can answer. Do you need cleaner at high-ISO images? Go 6D. Do you shoot landscapes or portraits? Go 6D. Do you shoot wildlife or sports where you need the 400mm reach? Go for the lens.

Wow, you're right. That's surprising (that it's not there, not that you're right.) They typically leave it off the upper-end bodies, knowing they won't use the built-in, but the 6D isn't upper end... Perhaps is was a cost savings move, to get a reasonably priced full-frame body out.

Canon has never put a pop-up flash on a full-frame body. I think Canon believes that full-frame users are more likely to purchase accessories for the ability to control other flashes from the camera and less likely to use a relatively weak (and ill-placed) pop-up flash for primary lighting.
