Another installment of the "Post Your ****" threads! Guidelines are pretty strait forward for this one, post any photo of your beloved pet. If you're like me, your pet is a prime subject to play around with to test a new lens, lighting, or anything to practice photo techniques ect ect..

I'll start off with the most recent one of my dog mimi!

Some of them. They were actually shared, andmost are no longer my responsibility. I enjoy animals, but over 40 animals distributed between dogs, cats, goats, and chickens, on less than an acre, canget to be a bit irritating...

I suspect that my "pets" are a bit larger than most folks--together, they weigh over a ton--at least 2200 lbs.

/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.UserFiles/00.00.00.23.54/noble_5F00_head_5F00_4x3_5F00_800.jpg

"Noble head"

"Statue"

Maestoso Tacoma, aka "Titus," (or, affectionately, "The Short, Fat Grey Horse") Lipizzan gelding, about 7 years old at the time. He's not very tall--14.2h, but quite "robust"--weighs roughly 1100 lb,
almost as much as the other horse below, who is 7-8" taller and not skinny.

/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.UserFiles/00.00.00.23.54/IMG_5F00_0192_5F00_2_5F00_800.jpg

/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.UserFiles/00.00.00.23.54/IMG_5F00_0198_5F00_600h.jpg

"No Name" (that's correct)-the "Tall Orange Horse," a SwedishWarmblood x Thoroughbred gelding, about 16.2h, about 22 years old at the time. Notice the difference in proportions, including their heads. Titus has a "Roman nose"--he's the Jimmy Durante of the stables. No Name's head is actually smaller than "normal," compared to his body, but he has very long legs. I've said that he has the body of a 16h horse, the legs of a 17h horse, and the head of a 15h horse: he was assembled out of spare parts.

All taken with Canon S3 IS, ISO 80, auto white balance.

When I was trying to dig out the pictures of my dog (there're a couple good ones I remember), I found I lost them all... They're all in one folder but I think I may have deleted them due to a recent system reinstall...[:'(]

Ok, this is my rescue Chester who loves to sleep with my husband in his big chair at night. I am only learning, these are my first pictures with SLR when I was "trying" to think what I was going to do rather than just using it like a hammer. Of course, I did not get exactly what I wanted. But the human legs in picture ARE intentional here, wanted to show the two buddies together. I just am not sure how to get them more blurred at the same time, would that have something to do with focus point? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am not quite sure how to get that composure thing ...

Nice shots, everyone. I think some of you need to frame your shots a little wider. As humans, we tend to focus in on the eyes & face. However, pets speak to us with their whole body--posture, wagging tail, etc.

This shot tells the story of a very old Rhodesian ridgeback boxer mix who had learned over the years that a Christmas tree means new toys.He had also learned that ripping into his presents early was bad, bad, bad-dog! So, herehe is checking hisplush toyfor the 100th time, knowing that he can't have it yet--thus the droopy tailat half-mast. He's depressed, buthopefulanticipation keeps his tail from goingall the way down.

This old friend is gone, but not forgotten, as ismy oldOlympus Camedia C-4040that that I used to take this shot. It got mehooked ondigital photography, lead me to my first DSLR(20D), and final retirement of my ancient AE-1.

/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.UserFiles/00.00.00.31.08/img_5F00_8695.jpg

XTi, same lens as above, 100mm, f/5.0, 1/100, ISO 1600, no PP. The picture is OOF but the expression is priceless.

In reality she is a playful kitty. She even "helps" with the laundry:

/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.UserFiles/00.00.00.31.08/_5F00_MG_5F00_9776.jpg

XTi, same lens, 105mm, f/4.5, 1/25, ISO 400 slight OOF on the cat...oh well

And she is kinda a dork:

/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.UserFiles/00.00.00.31.08/_5F00_mg_5F00_9380.jpg

XTi, same lens, 105mm, f/11.0, 1/800, ISO 1600, I used picasa's "fill light" function to bring her shadowed face up, hence the noise there. (not to mention that it was shot at such a high ISO...didn't notice till the cat was long gone from the window sill)

Can you tell I like my cat? There is a reason for the expression in the first one. Just wait till I get a strobist kit!

Sundance is 3 years old and 135 lbs so he's pretty physically imposing. But he's very sweet and loves people so we try to make him as accessible as possible. Here he is in his 2009 Halloween outfit -- a "lady" bug. We went to a local retail shopping area and he met a very sweet little girl who fell in love with him. Thought you'd enjoy these.

Jim,

Yes, I definitely relate. Our male, Wolf, was working towards his Schutzhund 1 when we moved and lost our contact with any clubs. He was the most nurturing, intelligent animal of any kind I've ever been in contact with, but if you saw him and didn't know him, you might involuntarily pee your pants, just a little. [:D] He lived to be 12 years old, and I cried like a little baby when we buried him.

Our first female, Greta, was a rescue from an abusive home. She looked just like your Sundance. Our breeder sold her as a pup and then found out what kind of home she was in, and forcibly took her back at 10-11 months old. She was such an expensive dog that we only could afford to co-own her with our breeder, but she eventually relinquished ownership for free after she saw how we took care of her.

Our second female, Daphne, was a daughter of the famous Nobbi vom Hegnenbacher Landl, Sch. III, IPO III, and WeltSeiger.

http://www.bassogarda.it/Fotografie pagine antenati/Stalloni sui pedigree/Nobbi vom Hegnenbacher Landl/Y21QJD9T8R_1.jpg

Also a bank-breaker, but we intended to breed her, so we made the investment. She ended up with an underbite as a youngster, and so we had her spayed at two years of age, only to have her bite correct at about 2 1/2. Ughhh!!! Long story short, before we got a replacement puppy, we had a child, and got out of the Rottie business because we were afraid how people would perceive them, and their ignorance would prevent them from letting their children play with our son.

So now we have Chocolate Labs. I am a an avid duck hunter, though, so it is also really enjoyable!

Sorry to hijack the thread.

We have a litter of Rottie pups on the ground -- they've just turned 8 weeks old -- and they were the stars of our 2010 Calendar. Thought you'd like to meet Ms Plummy who is now recovering from her New Years revelry[:)]. Enjoy!

Here a 3 of our cats - Coco and Mokey. The wife wanted to go with Coco and Chanel but I veto'd it as too chavvy! So instead named the second one after a Fraggle from Fraggle Rock!!

The first was taken with my Sigma 150mm macro lens f2.8, 1/125 and ISO400

The other two were taken with a Canon 85mm (prime)

Comments, suggestions and feedback welcome.

Welcome to the forums, doggiedoc! Your kitty is adorable ...nice photo! I've been thinking of moving up from my 50mm to the "L" version, just waiting to see what Canon comes out with this month.

Thanks for saving my photo of my lil' Sammy as a fav on flickr! [:D] I'd have ALOT more dogs if my city ordinance would allow ...but I'm limited to just my three! [:(]

I've meaning to post more of my pet pictures but I've been distracted by other threads. Love this forum!

Here is a picture of my cat Ginger. Ginger is not usually a very cooperative subject but this was taken in my garage in near darkness so <span style="color: #ff0000;"]he felt safer I suppose. The light coming through a partially open door to the outside made for a good pet portrait. I shot this with a rented EF85mm f/1.2<span style="color: #ff0000;"]L (original). Great lens but very slow AF.

So it's not just a "tax" related claimable bokeh issue.[:)]

On my 7D I'm leaning towards a 50mm, I am considering taking a gamble with the Sigma, the price difference is only about $100 here on either the Canon 50mm 1.4 or the Sigma 50 mm 1.4. They say if you get a good one you are lucky. I know yours is the 1.2, I'm going to rent one of them just to confuse the issue.

Then there is that long awaited Sigma 85mm 1.4 at about half the price of the Canon 85mm 1.2. Everyone says never renta 1.2 cause it will cost you big time.

Thought I would attach another photo of the "Lesser known, short front legged, long tailed, hopping dears" not my pets, but grazing at a vineyard just around the corner from my house. These evil eyed ones were spotted tonight on the way home. Going to try for some daylight pics, soon.

Sigma 85mm 1.4 at about half the price of the Canon 85mm 1.2. Not only am I a Canon brand snob, but I now officially have <span style="color: #ff0000;"]L fever! I am pretty sure I couldn't bring myself to buy an non L lens much less a non Canon lens. [H]

He was found near death with his poor little body head first drowned in a pool of filth at a waste facility! He was give IV to warm up his blood, and brought to life by a vet with a huge heart, as I believe all animal caretakers have! The fantastic part of this story is that the person who found this poor animal has a daughter that worked for the vet named, and she herself is training to become an animal doctor as well! This pup was sadly but thankfully in the right place at the right time! Thank you animal lovers for all of your fantastic work! :)

I like the 2nd shot!

The first 1st and the 3rd, I don't know. The puppy is OOF. In the first the snout seems to be more in focus than the eyes. I would suggest the eyes being in focus. The third shot...I'd rather see the puppy than the pumpkin...[:D]

Have you always gravitated to M mode or did you start in Av or Tv and graduate to M. I, personally, seem to gravitate to Av mostly and use my Quick Control Dial to adjust exposure as I see fit. What are the advantages for you with using M. I am not "there" yet...so to speak.

BTW, I think you have a great eye and are a natural and enjoy your photos very much. Keep up the good work!

Damian

ps. you're too modest....[;)]. You have a lot of talent.

12-04-2010, 06:36 AM
With my Rebel I was relying on AUTO too much so when I got the 7D I just went straight to Manual and just kept using it. I do use TV once in awhile but not often. When I take photos of my dogs, I'm getting pretty used to about where I need to be at with each one, although having a black dog, white dog & a buff colored one, it is sometimes challenging outside. I'll take a shot of the white one in the sun, then turn to take one of the black dog in the shade ...I'm constantly changing settings sometimes!

My worst habit is forgetting to switch out of AL SERVO when I don't need it!

Denise

BTW - Sometimes I get in moods of wondering why I try to do this at all so thank you SO MUCH for the compliments!!! [:D] [:D] [:D]

Hi Damian,

What are the advantages for you with using M. I am not "there" yet...so to speak.

I think you'll restrict your use of a camera if you consider M mode "better" or "more advanced" than Av, Tv or P mode, if that's what you were thinking. It's simply another option and tool that your camera provides. All of the modes have their use in the appropriate situation.

I find M great for photos under consistent lighting with varied subject colouring. I have been photographing people wearing dark clothing in a white walled room with black mats on the floor. When I was using Av mode when I started taking photos at this place I'd get under/over exposure depending on the amount of wall vs. floor or number of people in the shot. Now I set to M mode and check the meter, then check the histogram every so often and I know if I've got the camera level or from above, one or many people - they're all pretty well exposed. Another good example would be Denise'sblack dog and white dog but without the changing light. Exposure requirement is the same regardless of which dog but the camera meter would say otherwise in Av, Tv or P mode.

M mode is also great for flash photography. I'd hazard a guess that the macro-with-flash and strobists here on TDP are all using M.

At the other end of the scale if I'm taking photos of say people outdoors under varied lighting and want medium aperture then I've no problem using P mode and letting the camera sort out the exposure. In M mode I'd muck up most of my shots!

For everything else I photograph so far I'd probably use Av.

Probably the silliest thing I've done in the pastis use M mode but continually check the camera meter and adjust the shutter time to get the right exposure- until I realised I was simply being a human Av mode!

Now Denise... Don't quit on us. I've looked through your website and, while I don't have any website design tips, I really like your photos. I particularly liked the nature photos where you do really well at limiting the frame to two colours and nice bold colours at that!

Thanks for your comments guys, The huge nose pics were deliberate (If any of you read my recent post on "what lens do i need for full body dog portraits" i mentioned exactly that effect, fair point on perspective though, but with a wide angle i think you do tend to get close up without rearlising it), I used a wide angle, but they are quite quirky, the first 2 were with a 100mm 2.8L IS with my 5d mk1, I have more if anyone is interested

They are both Whippets , Ripley (after Ripley from Aliens) is only 11 weeks.

It's NOT the focal length that is the problem, but the perspective

I agree with everything else you said, George, but this puzzled me. I thought that perspective was a consequence offocal length and subject distance. You can't get a perspective like the last shot [of the first post on this page] with a longer focal length. I accept Ade's point that the perspective was deliberate, perhaps so that the whole shadow could be included, so it isn't necessarily a problem, but I agree that it can sometimes be undesirable. I like the perspective in this case, but I think the depth of field wasn't quite enough to get the nose sharp.

I have more if anyone is interested

Ade, welcome to the forums. Of course we're interested, why else would we be looking at this thread?[;)]

A friend is fostering some pups from the pound. They're all to be adopted within the next week. I got a chance to snap some pictures the other afternoon right at magic hour.

All shots are 7D + 70-200/2.8 IS mk1, ISO 800, f/4.5 or 5.6, Luck @ 98%, uncropped

Perspective has nothing to do with focal length. Consider this: artists have to deal with perspective, but the concept of "focal length" is meaningless to them. Da Vinci was a master of perspective, but he died about 90 years before the telescope was invented.

Also consider this: what is a "telephoto" focal length for a 35mm camera (e.g., 100mm) may be a "normal" lens or even "wide angle" for a larger format camera (e.g., 2x2, 6cmx6cm, 4x5). For example, the lens on a Yashica 124 6x6 twin lens reflex is 80mm, but it has about the same field of view/magnification as a 45-50mm lens on a 35mm camera. (Both are considered "normal" lenses--neither wide-angle nor telephoto.

You can see this, yourself, in several ways. One way would be to sit with your eyes closed and have someone come very close to you--1-2 ft. Stare straight ahead and open ONE eye. You should see the same sort of image as in the photos, for a while. (It might work even better if you look through a short tube, like a toilet paper roll.) The idea is to remove the clues that your brain normally gets to judge distance and depth and then to flatten the image.

Another way is to use a zoom lens and take a series of photos of the same subject--preferably something with depth fairly close, with the camera fixed, at different focal lengths. Then, crop the photos so that they all contain the same part of the image and scale them so that they all have the same pixel dimensions. You'll find that the perspective is exactly the same. I've actually done this, but it was at a very long distance with a Canon 100-400mm lens, so any difference might be harder to see. Here they are. One was taken at 100mm, the other at 400mm--a factor of 4 in focal length. Which is the 100mm image--without looking at the EXIF data, which was preserved?

http://idisk.me.com/gslusher/Public/perspective_demo/IMG_5227-crop-scaled.jpg

If I have time tomorrow or Wednesday, I'll try to do the same thing with my 15-85mm lens. To be strictly accurate, one should also adjust the aperture to keep the depth of field the same--and the shutter speed to keep the exposure the same. (Depth of field for a particular camera depends upon aperture and the size of an object on the sensor--i.e., on the combination of focal length and distance. A 100mm lens will have the same depth of field at a distance of 10 ft as a 50mm lens does at 5 ft, with the same aperture. See the
DOFMaster ("http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html) online depth-of-field calculator. (He also has apps for iOS and Android and Palm OS, which I have on my Palm TX.)

What DOES focal length "do," then? It determines the magnification or field of view, which essentially measure the same thing, as long as you're talking about a fixed image size--e.g., the camera sensor or the film frame. A telephoto lens does just what a telescope does: it has a narrow field of view which it magnifies to a standard sensor/film dimension. A "wide angle" lens has a wider field of view, which it compresses to fit that standard sensor or film frame.

The focal length thus determines the "framing"--how much of the scene is in the photo. You should choose the distance (and angles, etc) to get the perspective you want, then use the focal length to get the framing (what is and is not in the photo) you want. If you move (any way--forward/back, right/left, up/down, the perspective will change, but not with focal length. (THis was a major point in the weekend Nikon School of Photography seminar I attended in about 1979.)

So, yes , you can get the same perspective as the last shot with a
telephoto lens, as long as it will focus close enough. You just won't
see as much of the dog's face.

What is considered a "normal" perspective is somewhat cultural, especially when dealing with people. Americans tend to be most comfortable at a separation of 4-6 feet or so, but some other cultures treat lesser or longer distances as "normal." (Watch people talking to each other and see how far apart they stand.) This is why Americans think of an 85mm lens (35mm equivalent--that's about 53mm on a Canon 1.6 field of view crop factor camera like the XXD, 7D, and XXXDs) as a "portrait" lens. That will fill a 35mm frame with a person's head and shoulders at about 6 feet.

To simplify what George says a bit (hopefully), the only thing that affects perspective is distance to subject. Focal length is irrelevant in determining perspective. The confusion comes in that although focal length does not affect perspective, it can affect how close you stand to a given subject, and that alters perspective. Generally, you can be closer to a subject with a wide lens, leading to the mistaken conclusion that wide lenses have an 'exaggerated' perspective - it's not the focal length, it's the proximity to the subject. The wide angle lens merely allows you to capture the whole subject from that close distance, whereas with a telephoto lens you'd need to stand much further away.

Thanks, John. That's what I was getting at. I agree that the issue is perspective, caused by the proximity of the camera, in this case enabled by a wide angle lens, so I think we're all agreeing with each other, even if my language wasn't as precise as it should have been in such expert company.
