Taking a step back, the R5 is really Canon's comparable "Flagship" and the R1 is really a unique offering aimed at a specific audience. The R5/A1/Z8 have similar MP (45-50) and fps (10-12 mechanical and up to 30 electronic). A simplistic comparison, sure, but two key features that are almost identical.

Going back 12 years, the 5D3 was 6 fps and the 1Dx was 12 fps. At the time, that was a significant and meaningful differentiation.

I am sure they are coming, but it will be interesting to see the comparisons of the R5 II to the A1 and Z8. But I might adjust my thinking a bit and start considering the R5 II as a co-Flagship camera.

I suppose it's semantics. The best or most important thing owned or produced by a particular organization." Canon says the R1 is their flagship, so it is." The R5 II will probably sell 6-7 times as many units as the R1.

The Toyota Century is their flagship SUV, it costs $170,000. They'll sell many more Land Cruisers, though...and even more RAV4s.

I think that's when Canon really started pushing the 5-series into the professional realm with the 5DIII. Same AF as the 1D X, which for Canon was a big differentiator for the older 1-series bodies.

For someone who wants more MP, the R5 II is almost a no-brainer. As I've said before, while I'm not opposed to more, the 18-24 MP range is enough for my needs. For me, the 1-series (and R3) is more about ergonomics.

It seems that a few people have had their hands on a pre-production R1.

Jan Wegener is one. Solid review. Long story short, he mentioned making the R1 his primary camera with the R5 II secondary when he needs more resolution. Cited better AF, apparent better DR, great colors, great EVF and being able to use the AF-On button to go from 20 fps (half press) to 40 fps (full press). Calls it the best overall camera he has ever used. Cons were the 24 MP and buffer size. But those were minor-ish cons for special situations.

I also have seen this video from Fabian Fopp. I had never seen a video of his before, but apparently a wildlife photographer noteworthy enough for Canon to give a pre-production model too. He was also a fan.

As for me, I actually pre-ordered an R5 II and R1 at the time they were announced. The R1 pre-order was more of a "why not." As I have mentioned in the thread of the R5 II, I canceled that pre-order as I was simply not excited enough about the R5 II over the R5.

But....I have never canceled the R1 pre-order and the excitement over owning a R1 has grown. I am definitely going to keep the pre-order and give it a go. I have anticipated going to a 2 body kit and had been thinking of having 2 of the same or very similar bodies. But, at this time, I am thinking I may end up 50/50 ish split between my R5 and R1. We'll see.

Waiting eagerly for the B&H charge to hit my CC. They're still showing an availability date of 11/14 (not sure if that means when they ship it or when I'll receive it; I suspect the former but I usually get my B&H orders in one day).

Meanwhile, Apple did hit my CC for the 16" M4 MacBook Pro that I ordered last week, but with them it means shipped from China with an expected delivery date of 11/19.

Some excellent new gear is headed your way.

I did get my preorder in early, so hopefully it will be hear the 15th or 16th. I actually get back from a work trip on the 15th, so the timing would be great.

I purchased the 16" M4 though B&H - same price and maybe Brian/TDP gets a piece. I want to transfer my 2 ish T 'worthwhile pics' from my mechanical external to a new 4 or 5 T SSD. The mechanicals have bit locker installed and I don't want to carry it over to the SSD. Thoughts on transfer process?

I think you'd need something like this to access a Bitlocker drive from a Mac: https://iboysoft.com/bitlocker-for-mac/ but I have no experience with it.

I've got a small stack of the Samsung T7 SSDs (4 TB and 2 TB) and they work very well.

I've got an M4 Mini on the way (supposedly coming Friday). I'm considering getting a TerraMaster D8 Hybrid to sit along side it. It can take 4 up to 22TB drives (HDD or SSD), and 4 up to 8TB M.2 NVMes. This would let me attach all my old drives as is and/or potentially move data from my old 2TB HDDs over to faster SSD drives or NVMe storage as I see fit. It's only USB 3.2 (10Gbit), but it's also fairly dirt cheap for that many storage bays.

If you want a small portable drive for your laptop though, then like Neuro said, the Samsung T7s work well. I've got a 2TB T7 Shield kicking around to not use all my internal laptop storage. You can likely snag a deal on Black Friday, or maybe one of the many pre-BF sales.

The M4 Mini looks like a sweet little machine. I've got a nice desk setup already (5K:2K display, Magic Keyboard and Trackpad, ethernet, etc., connected to a Stone Pro dock), but since there are 5 people in the house and we each have our own Mac laptop, there's no real need for a 'home computer'.

It looks like my M4 Pro will also be here Friday, supposedly. Apple said 11/19 when I ordered, their shipping notice came this morning stating by 11/15 but UPS says tomorrow.

I have a little 2-bay Synology NAS with a pair of 10 TB drives that I use for Time Machine backups of the above-mentioned 5 Macs and general storage.

They go on sale pretty frequently. I have a pair of 4 TB T7s that I also use for Time Machine backups, and a pair of 2 TB T7s that I use to archive 4K video and RAWs >5 years old. I keep one of each pair at work, I am fortunate to only go in one day per week, and I swap out the drives when I do so I always have an offsite backup (3-2-1 backup principle, though in my case since one of them is a RAID1 NAS and I swap two SDD for backup, I'm actually doing 5-4-1).

One great thing about having a TM backup on an SSD, though it's only of occasional utility, is that setting up a new Mac from a TM backup of the current one is about the easiest way to go, and from an SSD it's a pretty fast process.
