No dark frames. Just a single shot. Tried both ISO 1600 & 3200, both looked acceptable. I actually had to darken the sky a bit and add contrast to get the sky to look more like night time. Both of which add noise, but it still held up nice. Better than I thought it would.

I think you are correct, but I did not use it. I usually don't use long exposure NR for a couple of reasons, but mostly because I am too impatient to wait the extra 30 seconds for the shot to be done. Pretty sad... but more true than I care to admit. I would also like to have control of noise reduction, and don't like to rely on the camera for that.

Best not to use the in-camera long exposure NR – doing so actually *adds* random noise. It's good for removing hot/stuck pixels, but RAW converters do that anyway. When subtracting a dark frame, the random noise is in different places in the two frames, so you're effectively summing the noise (the way to remove random noise is to average frames). The noise addition with LENR isn't really noticeable at low ISO, but at higher ISO settings like 1600+, you'll see it.

I haven't been getting out and shooting much so yep, this is my best current shot of lately. Can someone ID the bird? My daughter thinks its a female goldfinch but it seemed to long to me and the underside was too bright yellow with brown stripes. Is it a goldfinch?

Looks great. Completely non-scientific, but this looks to me like less noise in the shadows than I would expect from ISO 6400 on my 5D III.

It's definitely an American Goldfinch but I think it could be a male in the process of changing from summer to winter plumage or a juvenile just coming into adult plumage.
